In Chapter 1036, King talks about "Joy Boy" and "Pirate King" in the same conversion, as if both are relevant to each other, going as far to deem "Joy Boy" as having a "legends" status:

I think it puts it a little more into perspective as to what Kaido had been saying in Chapters 1001 and 1014, as if the victor defeating him not only will become closer to being the Pirate King, but also being Joy Boy, and change the world in the process, whatever that is:

I think they are adjacent to one another but definitely connected. Whatever is on Raftel is related to Joy Boy and the Void Century but doesn't guarantee you to be Joyboy.

Well going by King's situation and Luffy losing Round 2, it seems as if you have a better chance at being Joy Boy if you're not only the strongest, but also save people like how Kaido saved King, so maybe something to do with that.
