Powers & Abilities Anyone else like the concept of G5, but not the way it’s implemented?

I think the connection with Nika, who wasn't a concept we were familiar with until like, chapter 1000 and has now recontexualized how various things that existed before chap 1000 is the biggest issue.

Also Luffy's fruit being a mythical zoan and not a Paramecia is just goofy, especially since Luffy's fruit isn't even really like any other mythical zoan either. Since there are characters who view Luffy as literally *Nika* but no one sees Sengoku as the literal Buddah to be worshiped. It's just headache inducing.

The rest is meh. I remember when people made theories about Luffy becoming a monkey god or something after g4.

I just hate the fruit being a god zoan after years of it being a paramecia.

I like G5 pushing the fruit back into doing interesting things the way we got pre-gears. Really the only properly Luffy use of the Gears was G3 being a bit of a Popeye reference plus the laugh of midget Luffy after using it.

I could do with the looney tunes stuff being a bit toned down. I think the anime actually has a better balance than the manga.

But I just don’t like it being a god fruit. I would have been fine with it just having been the fruit that Joy Boy had (and that Nika either had himself, or was created by a result of his life).

I like gear 5 in a vacuum, my problem with it is that Luffy became the chosen special one with an overpowered fruit. It was very clearly a retcon and I don't understand why.

One of the biggest charms of Luffy was that he took a lower tier fruit and through sheer creativity turned into one of the greatest fighters. It was actually a major plot point for a long time that some people just have special fruits that make them invincible, or are just born special. But it's not unsurpassable because as Pekoms said 'logias who think they're invincible die young in the new world'. It was one of the major reasons Ace got slapped.

Luffy was never my favourite character or fighter, but now he doesn't even make the list because it's just another Naruto story.

Edit: Not to mention Oda is doing the exact same thing with Shanks and will probably do it with Roger too... it's depressing.

Actually I have a problem with the part where Luffy laughs
I think Oda wanted Luffy to look like someone like Mask but he failed in that goal
I have no problem with the fruit model change because Oda at least prepared us with the Kata's fruit before because at first we all thought he was a Logia user

Many people have already addressed the problems with retconning it into a god fruit, but the execution is also simply terrible.

Having Luffy laugh like a jackass when someone he promised to protect is dying beside him is just abominable. I would have called you crazy if you told me something like that would ever happen in One Piece before Wano.

The concept itself is shit

It says that people can only be free if they have eaten the nika fruit, otherwise they are not free.
It also further destroys Goofy's already pathetic dream of being PK when he claims he is now the freesest he can be, there's no reason for him to be PK to be free (which was an already shit dream because it never explained why being pk would give him freedom and what he lacked that did not make him free)

The looney tunes powers are also shit.
Oda can't make comedic looney tune comedy even if his daughter's life depended on it. He doesn't understand the timing nor the art of tunes. He always stretches it.
Gear 5 also 99% of the is just shitty gear 3 punches, which feel less powerful than gear 4 attacks.

It takes goofy like 2 pages to prepare a punch in gear 5
when in gear 4 the combat was quick and there were dozen combos in like few panels.

Not even gonna talk about the dogshit design of him just being ugly base goofy with white turd on his head

Honestly? I kind of feel the opposite way. I feel like part of the problem with Gear 5 is that it's not Looney Tunes enough!

If it's going to break reality, I kind of want to see it fully shatter reality! I kind of want Luffy to be pulling off crazy stuff left and right. Go full Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with how broken this power can be.

Personally, I feel like the stuff Luffy has been doing so far has felt...kind of tame? The land turning into rubber and eyes popping out is fine...for a start. But, I don't know, I keep waiting for Luffy to do something REALLY carzy with the powers.

Have the guts to go full Tex Avery or Wackyland with it all. Play with the panel borders and the gutters of the page. Turn the entire page into Luffy's body that the villain is trapped inside. Break the fourth wall a little more. Change up art styles to make it feel really otherworldly. Have the plants and animals morph into having Luffy's face. Have the villain's weapons start to turn into rubber in their hands....and then have it be revealed to a transformed Luffy!

Mind, we might be leading up to something like that. Oda probably still wants to be able to escalate things with Luffy's powers. So, maybe Oda's saving the really crazy stuff for later on, just so there's a sense of Luffy still getting more powerful as he gets more used to these new powers. And I feel like there's going to be a good reason that the Gorosei are afraid of Nika. Nika probably can literally break reality and cause some sort of irreversible disaster.

So, I think we're in a weird spot with Gear 5, right now. Right now, the power is overpowered, but not in a visually interesting way. I think as the story goes on, it'd be fun if Oda really let Luffy let loose and gave us some crazy visuals, like something out of a Grant Morrison or R Crumb comic.
