The student looked upon the master and asked: "Shishou why do we call Zoro the Grandmaster?" The master turned around to face the student leveling a solemn stare and speaking with the gravitas befitting his position as the 4th master of the Holy Temple: "He just is. Such is the way of the world, a mystery beyond the likes of us mere mortals to comprehend".

"Who can compare to Zoro? Who can withstand his terrible might? The Grandmaster is a fearless and impeccable warrior, a mighty man of valour. The Grandmaster's wrath is a terrible thing. For it is written no matter the opponent, regardless of their haki, devil fruit or other abilities, the Grandmaster always oneshots!"

"He oneshots his opponents without even cutting them. He oneshots his opponents with a seppuku knife. As surely as what goes up must come down, so also is Zoro's oneshot certain! Sing praises to his name for his prowess his unmatched, his skills are unparalleled, his oneshots unrelenting. No matter the opponent or situation, Lord Zoro shall prevail. Praise be his name!"

FIlled with awe at the enlightenment the venerated master had provided him, the student too shouted: "Praise be his name!"

Well yeah, not saying there is anything more to it just that Zoro doesn't normally shout out his sword name... all the guys usually just stick to attack names
Inb4 Zoro didn't cut the cliff and Enma did it by itself.

Reposting this here as I don't want to corrupt my earlier poetry:

Well, their swords would be somewhat between alive and inanimate. Enma is just a sword that drains Haki.
Enma and Sandai have personalities of their own. They're not as alive as Zanpakuto, but they're not completely inanimate either.

Yes that is true, but we didn't get to see Zoro using the sword in these panels. So maybe instead of leaving it to us fans to assume Zoro used Enma here, Oda decided to directly state it to us.

The other possibility that was mentioned in by BossYimz is also interesting tho.

What if it does? :wonderland:
As a Zoro fan I refuse to believe that. It means the sword is more important than the swordsman. And let's not forget that Luffy said he will 'cut' Kaido. If sword is indeed able to attack on his own, there is a worry that Luffy will end up being the savior yet again.

Swords matter or the worlds's strongest swordsman wouldn't be using the strongest sword (which is also a black blade).

What does Black blades have to do with it being alive? Yoru doesn't attack on his own. Yoru is a very good blade, but that's all. It is not a sword with personality or magic. Even it being a black blade can probably be attributed to the swordsman and not the sword itself.

Gran D. Master

What difference does it make?
Well everyone who thinks Zoro spoke to the sword now believes Enma is alive or some shit...
Whereas I just saw Zoro speaking to Sanji instead of the sword in the exact same panel, and though nothing of it.
See the difference?

Well, why would he shout 'Enma' to Sanji?
the same way Usopp shouts "Usopp Hammer!" :luuh:

I think the higher grade swords are, to some extent, β€˜alive’ in that they have personalities and can adapt to or reject certain users. Zoro has called Sandai Kitetsu a problem child and Enma sucked out Zoro’s haki of its own volition, but could be commanded to return it. Previously we were told that the Sandai Kitetsu had brought immense misfortune to all of its wielders except Zoro. So in that sense, Yoru, Shodai Kitetsu and likely Nidai as well have some degree of sentience. This ties in with Japanese Shinto beliefs where they attribute spiritual, living attributes to objects.

Seeing as inherited will is a huge theme in Op and in Ringo, swords are buried along with their wielders, it’s likely that a high grade sword can absorb some aspects of its wielder’s personality as well, especially those that became black blades after prolonged use. Zoro inheriting Wado from Kuina symbolised him taking up her part of the journey, him turning it into a black blade will symbolise that it has well and truly become his own imo.

I was saying that the swords matter. The fact that Mihawk is using the strongest sword, means that the quality of the blade matters.

Sandai has a personality:
  • Zoro has mentioned that it is very bloodthirsty.
  • It is extremely sharp.
  • It cuts even more than Zoro intended to cut (before he mastered it at least).
