To be honest there isn't much to go on but what there is is cannon so there is that.
Oda has lots of fun behind some of the names he gives characters or items/objects basically anything else, some are clever and some go over everyone's head who isn't Japanese and there are a few good souls out there that help explain those "easter eggs" for us.
On that it brings me to the hunch that the "D" could represent a characteristic of the clan and that being Dual, as in dual welding which is what Blackbeard does now, how he found out that is what it meant or if he chose to say let fate decide and said here goes nothing and somehow consumed Whitebeards DF.
With so little relayed to us on why only one DF can be consumed and tbh I would enjoy seeing how Oda would visually show us what happens if you eat two DF... thing is he has and well the guy is still alive and welds two powers.
Maybe both his DF balance themselves or something which is why he can posses two? and then can he weld both at the same time or is it one at a time(Blackbeard or anyone else who consumes a second?)
