I always thought since MF that he could see branches of fate. That's why he gave that speech about seconds of courage, because he knew Luffy would get away, but wasn't sure what effect it would have on the world.

His only 1 up on Shanks is having better sword skills from back when Shanks was only a 1 bil rookie pirate
