  1. Wedding cake mom
  2. Skinny mom
  3. O-lin
  4. Inconsistent use of haki specifically conquerors. Only using coating on panel again page one. Nothing before or after
  5. Mother mode
  6. Not being allowed to do anything to protect her ship from falling
  7. Falling asleep when she regained her memory
  8. Even inconsistent use of homies. Them disappearing when convenient
    • Them not being with her when she fell or became olin
    • Like deadass even misery went missing multiple times even mid attacks. Straight up vanishing for no reason by the end
    • Hell even when she fell down the hole and was conscious she for some reason couldn't call her homies
  9. She wasn't even allowed to land mighty nation once
Big mom is a character undeniably handled to say the least pretty bad by oda. One of the main reasons being is she's put into a lot of situations where her strength makes the plot/story oda wants to write difficulty

His way around this being either just nerfing big mom so she isn't able to use her power and just straight up restraining or restricting her.

Like obviously her being strong was important to making the strawhats run away from her post wedding or going to wano and udon to cause a giant ruckus. Both cases where her being strong was important but where oda had to restrain her power and keep her out of character
  • First time through hunger pangs
  • Second time through amnesia aka olin

Why does he put her through these situations where he has to limit her strength, intelligence, and personality? Idk probably because it makes where he wants to move the plot more convenient tbh

Weirdly oda "respects" her enough to make her an emperor at the very least an par with the rest but not enough as a character to actually let her show it

Big Mom has been at the top for a long ass time. It was time for her retirement like WB, the way she went out is a joke but at her age, She's better off playing with grandkids.

I always put it this way: anyone whos not pent up to be a Luffy (or Zoro) antagonist or isnt purposefully a joke character (Buggy, Caesar, etc), will always get this treatment. Katakuri was portrayed way better and hes a weaker character. Kaido was portayed monumentally better. Blackbeard is always portrayed better eventually. Kizaru, Akainu, etc. Shanks (whether or not you believe he and Luffy will fight) is literally the highest end of portrayal the series currently has.

Think about it.

I don't fully disagree but i do think its a little different in big mom's case

Like sometimes characters like luffy or blackbeard will struggle alot more than they should need to. Usually because they don't understand another person abilities or just aren't fully serious yet

Most characters don't have their intelligence, power, personality, abilities, etc. Taken away from them multiple times for the sake of moving the plot forward to that extent. Even against kid and law her devil fruit and haki power felt restricted

I heavily suspect that Oda genuinely didn't and still doesn't know what to make of Big Mom, and that he wrote himself in a corner many times over trying and failing to make good use and writing of her by making her the antagonist after Dressrosa, then realizing that the Straw Hats weren't ready for her and finding all kind of excuses to nerf her and justify the Straw Hats + allies' escape (mental illness, hunger pangs, wedding cake, vivre card), and then trying to resolve her story as an antagonist in Wano but once again in a shitty way by nerfing and dumbing her (waterfall, amnesia, O-Lin, Mother mode, crap fight against Law and Kidd).

The man just legitimately couldn't find any good excuse to justify the Straw Hats + allies being able of fighting or escaping her.

It also speaks a lot about Oda's long-term thinking, sexism and capacity to write female characters.

She is damn strong, the problem is that people think that top tiers only have top tier attacks.

Look at Luffy, at base, commanders will give him trouble and maybe even defeat him, he needs to upgrade his level using his gears to finish the job.

Oda's treatment and use of Big Mom was a great tool into helping me how sexist and bad with female characters Oda truly is, and how messed up his New World planning has been, and how much the quality of the story has declined.

Big Mom's shitty treatment by Oda is only matched by his handling of her daughters BrΓ»lΓ©e, Compote and Smoothie.

I mean, an average video game, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, did a stellar job at using and highlighting Smoothie in comparison to how he has handled her.
