You can afford Egghead the same logic in that it was really about revealing Vegapunk, who had been hyped in secrecy for years just like those locations, and Oda needed a proper venue.
My trepidation about Lodestar is that every description of it is that it's just an uninhabited island and so there'd be no real stinger in going there exclusively for the island itself. Though that might make it ideal as a very quick pivot island to springboard off to Laugh Tale in like 5 chapters.

Either that or its the place where everyone fights for the 4th RP. As far as I understand, its at least the place you need to get to before you can cross the ocean after to Laugh tale using tjem, but If I had to guess, it wont be easy for Luffy at that point given a few people also doing the same lol.
I definitely think it needs to be featured/shown for a decent bit though, at least to show us that this is the last log pose island and that this is where you'd learn about the 4 RPs.

Now, if wb in prime was weaker than Mohawk, then when wb got weaker due to age and illness, the distance would not have become "shorter".
It would have become "Longer" or "Larger" Or "bigger"

This isn't Mihawk and Shanks situation where the manga doesn't need to say Mihawk is stronger because his title tells us he's stronger.
Mihawk wanted to know the true distance between WB and them. He noticed WB grew weaker and wanted to know how much weaker he was to him.
By placing the character with the strongest defense in front of WB to protect WB from Mihawk's attack, it made it very clear that attack was too much for him to handle.
That wasn't the only scene that showed WB grew weaker. WB couldn't even stop an attack from a veteran level opponent right in front of him. In the past he could stop attacks from Ace while asleep.

Yeah that's sort of what I mean as a springboard. Something similar to where it's a setup for the final gambit between all the major players after the One Piece, and you get some mini spats here or there before everyone departs for Laugh Tale, assuming it's on the ocean and not above or below it.
Though it being uninhabited, and old as hell, could make it a good battle royal spot too, as Oda can shelve any worries about civilians caught in the Strawhat crossfire. Just a whole ass arc of nothing but fighting.
