I wouldn’t call it a gag, it just isn’t a completely antagonistic rivalry and it doesn’t mean they are equals in strength but the rivalry is very real. The nature of their rivalry just isn’t one where they’re trying to kill each other but they use each other as a measuring stick all the time.
