I actually agree with the OP that it was prepared from the beginning, but thing is, a lot of the things surrounding the awakening itself still felt kinda forced. Such as Luffy dying and then getting resurrected... that part wasn't planted/indicated/foreshadowed anywhere, unless I am forgetting...
