Then why was he given a secondary role at Marineford while the admirals were clearly showcased as the primary offensive force of the Navy + Warlords.
And why did Oda put him up against the YC4/YC5 and the admirals against the emperor-YC2.

Since it’s pretty obvious that Zoro and Sanji will wind up fighting admirals before the end of the series.
It is thus in the best interest of both Zoro and Sanji fans to wank the admirals as much as possible.
