If Kid is wise enough to learn from his mistakes like you say, then he should've been wise enough to realize Luffy was worth trusting. After all, it was Luffy who helped free him and Killer from Udon.

That is Kid’s character flaw. He’s extremely arrogant and zealous, never backing down, and almost never learning from his mistakes.
There are a lot of people like that in the world. Those who despise being told they are wrong, not trusting people outside your circle, living in your own bubble...
Oda does not need an excuse. It’s his story and he can do with it whatever he wants. This is the direction he’s chosen for Kid. Maybe it changes sometime later, but that doesn’t necessarily mean what he’s currently doing is wrong.
Luffy’s the main character, Kid is not. Luffy accepts aid and learns things from others, Kid does not. Luffy developing his fruit, haki, they are all part of his growth. Even Kid is merely a stepping stone towards Luffy’s ascension.
Where exactly does Kid have better portrayal?
Besides that, my point was that Law isn’t as physically inclined a fighter as Kid. It makes sense why he’d develop his powers in more unique ways than Kid.
Of course he could do a lot more with it. The question is does Oda want to?
