That makes sense. Americans never liked the "Zany" side of Anime and preferred more "Grounded" anime. For example I have seen way too people think SoL anime only became a thing in 2000s when I watched a lot of 80s SoL Anime as a kid.

One Piece always had certain issues. But a lot of them got worse. Alabasta had the issue of Oda's Worldbuilding getting too ambitious, only difference is that the editors were able to control him back then. Enies Lobby had the issue of shitty Minor characters. Skypiea had pacing issues etc.
