He did no damage because of scale defense, not because he had bad AP. He got 1 shot for plot, like Zoro got blown out by Yeti Cool Brothers for plot.

Kaido didn't feel he needed to dodge and had to be told by Big Mom , and it is a much slower attack than a red hawk with a large drain on Zoro. Kaido knew he needed to dodge red hawk, and it is a faster casual attack, that is the difference, Luffy actually shit talked Kaido over it.
