The fella is ruthless for the most part otherwise
Though he can be the most thoughtful straw hat imo
Since he does the Mr. Prince stuff in the background a lot
In the scene in question, Zoro is the one to suggest Chopper treating Wyper and claims that while he doesn't even get what's going on (lol) he was impressed by Wyper's qualities as a warrior or something along those lines.
The scene is supposed to highlight Zoro's respect for a fellow warrior.
Oda's character writing is rather simple really. He often takes an old character template and adds/changes certain traits. Wyper's personality always seemed very similar to Zoro's.
