If I had to start to play Pokemon games actively, the which one should I play first?

Fire Red or even Let's go (but the catching sucks) to play the best game.
If you have a switch the remakes of diamond/pearl are actually nice.
Maybe Sword and shield if you want just a easy game to relax and not think too much. The starters suck but the game by itself is mindless fun.
