Current Events Big Mom’s “Mother Mode” is some of the worst writing in all of One Piece...

#63
Yes you think he will use it for big mom to join Luffy ‘s grand fleet ?:steef:

hyyyyyyypppeeeeee.
no , but establishing that she's not completely irredeemable terrible person is necessary, especially considering her past

also if some other children or even Tama herself in the future helped change BM i dont think that would be terrible depending on the execution

however BM will not become an allie obviously

Also, the Merry stuff was introduced in Sky Island, long before Enies Lobby. Love it or hate it, it did not come out of nowhere. This "Mother Mode" shit literally just popped up in the latest chapter with no build up.

Besides, just because something is consistent does not mean that it is not a fundamentally terrible idea.

Imagine if Magellan cornered all the prisoners with Venom Demon during Impel Down Arc. Our protagonist and his allies are sweating buckets and all hope seems lost as the terrifying Warden has them all cornered. Magellan slowly advances, each step he takes forward brings our beloved characters closer to their room when all of a sudden......
Magellan lets loose a rip roaring feat of sheer flatulence that stupifies the reader. Ha! I bet you did not expect that to happen, did you dear consumer?:willsmith:

In the face of an oncoming diarrhea attack of epic proportions, Magellan, shame etched across his sweat drenched face at his bowel's betrayel, retreats to the nearest toilet to relieve himself of his rectal burden thus allowing our heroes to escape from an early grave.
Now, is the above scenario consistent with Magellan's character?

Indeed it is. It was even introduced earlier in the arc and was singled out as an odd habit of Magellan's.

Does that make it a good scenario?

Feck no. It is cheap, it utterly kills any and all tension and it completely humilates the arc's main antagonist.

So much like this "Mother Mode" madness, just because a fundamentally stupid scenario is arguably consistent with the story and was even introduced earlier, that does not make the stupid scenario any less stupid.
I’m glad you mentioned the setup in Skypiea, I thought about editing it into my post but I got distracted IRL. As far as the Magellan example, I couldn’t have said it better myself; it seems like very few of Linlin’s personality traits are meant to make her as menacing or insurmountable as we’ve long been told the Yonko are...if she’s meant to be an ally, Oda’s just wasting time with the pretense, which we both know is nothing new :brootea:

It has been established by Big Mom's flashback, there's nothing to establish anymore. Form Big Mom's flashback we saw that Big Mom was a good little girl in her childhood, Oda had perfectly established it in her flashback, it was the best part of that god damn arc.

Exactly!!!
Only it was first introduced in sky island with Ussop, then in woter seven Franky actually revealed what it was, and only then Oda used it in Enies Lobby. That is a perfectly executed sequence of introduction, reveal and usage; you can't introduce something out of nowhere, everything has to go through three steps before being used in the story.

I don't teach this for free but you guys pissed me off so much that I'm willing to give you few classes. In order to use something in a story you first have to:
  • Establish it as an exciting thing early on in the story.
  • Then you have to explain it somewhere in between, tell the audience how it works or make some hints for the future.
  • Then finally you can reveal it when the appropriate time comes.
Here's my advice for you kid: before defending Oda please learn few things about literature, otherwise you make a fool out of yourself.

yes but it's not just about just having a good and a bad side

Oda is showing in details the good traits BM have , traits that actually make sense she would have considering her history

at the same time he showed she's a hypocrite and have no self awareness

Wich is her character in a nutshell, but establishing those traits I think will help a lot when the envitable final battle against BM happen, the fight can be a bit more emotional and the conflict a bit more complex

and again idk taking out P1 for a period of time is a big deal, and if you think BM will become an Allie and betray Kaido then you're just wrong , that won't happen

Wrong, Oda showed us her good traits and bad traits in WCI, it was her fu*king arc, there's nothing to introduce about her after Wano. Go re-read WCI arc if you want to understand her character more.

Big Mom betraying Kaido is a completely different topic that I'm not going to discuss it here. I've already said what I wanted to say about THE BETRAYAL plot in deferent thread and I'm not going to reapet myself.

and as you can see, we still dont know everything, and Oda is still adding more traits to her character, and the reasoning I already explained

what do you mean there's nothing to introduce about her after Wano ? are you the author? you don't know what Oda is planning for BM, and any hints for her future suggest she fight Luffy in Elbaf, so no mother mode could still be important in the future and be used to develop her character

Bro, that Magellan example is on point. :milaugh:

This is one of the worst arguments trying to defend One Piece I’ve ever seen. So because it’s a fictional story that means we can’t criticize it?
:kaidowhat:
Obviously You can criticise it

:kaidowhat:
I’am not even expressing my opinion about the actual point you arose.

I was just pointing out that the criteria on which you base your criticising are questionable to say the least.
To me it just looks that you are willingly pretending that certain things never existed in One Piece and are only a nowadays issue just for the sake of justifying your hair splitting, and pretending that your rants are based on objective facts.

It's convenient and very dumb but it was definitely set up by One Piece standards, in WCI there's a chapter where it's brought up that Big Mom is in an extreme and unstoppable rage and then she meets with her youngest children and is back to being normal and even happy, considering this is a series that teases 1/20th of a sake cup it seems quite explicit in comparison. So far it has only served as an interaction to Tama and Big Mom still holds her grudges against the strawhats so it's not like it has been particularly egregious so far, her amnesia was much worse than this imo.

Again, the keyword here is "SOMETIMES" comes out.

So when it does come out, it has to be in a logical situation. Coming out when she sees Momo, who has no connection to her character in the slightest, makes no sense.
Despite your attempts to justify the waste of paper and ink that is ‘Mother Mode’, this does not, in fact, make sense. In fact, the very vagueness of this condition makes it an asspull, the utter lack of defined conditions means that Oda can write it into whatever cheap shit scenario he comes up with and excuse his own lack of creativity with ‘BuT I SaID SoMeTiMeS’1!1!111

The conditions were that it sometimes comes out around young children, not “comes out whenever Fat Retard sees child she is fond of”. The first one makes some level of sense given that Carmel pretended to be an all-loving mother, even to children who weren’t hers. The second one is just Oda pulling shit out of his ass to give Nami and Chopper a cheap reprieve.

As for Merry, ships having a consciousness or being inhabited by a spirit is a pretty common staple of naval folklore. Dunno how it’s comparable to this situation.

:lawsigh:
There's a limit of how much traits you can give to a character, Oda had already given her a ton shit of traits in WCI and adding more after WCI is ritarted. When you add too many traits to a character then that character becomes imbalanced, and the entire character crumbles under its weight. This type of stupid mistakes are usually done by the beggners, a mere students who are only starting to learn about literature, but Oda is a worldwide known author with a huge experience behind his work, these mistakes are unacceptable and unethical for an author of his caliber.

If Literature had fixed rules it would have never moved beyond the epic of Gilgamesh.
