Character Discussion Desire: Vegapunk's Downfall

#1
In the latest chapter of One Piece, we finally got to see who the traitor was. This was an exciting reveal for me, because ever since the start of this arc, I’ve been wondering how Oda would demonstrate Vegapunk’s fatal flaw. As I stated in a previous analysis, oftentimes the truth is hidden in plain sight, staring you right in the face. It was none other than York, the lazy, greed ridden junk food eater.

From the very beginning of this arc, we knew that desire was going to have heavy thematic relevance. From the origin of devil fruits, to all of Vegapunk’s inventions, all things are brought into this world due to desire. The desire to become the Pirate King, the desire to create a shared library of knowledge anyone can access, and even the desire to turn into a jacket. Dreams are the essence of this story, as is the will to make them a reality. The irony with Vegapunk though, is that his downfall was to his own desire. Who does one trust more than oneself? Vegapunk believed so much in himself that he didn’t even think about the possible desires each of his various traits may possess, when they are usually overruled by the logic and goodness within him.

One thing I picked up early on in this arc, was that Vegapunk and his satellites are an inversion of Luffy and the Straw Hats. Luffy, the man who can’t function without the help of those he trusts, and Vegapunk, the genius scientist who does everything himself. In chapter 90 titled “What Can You Do?” We see the famous speech from Luffy: “I don’t know how to use a sword, I don’t know how to navigate, I can’t cook, and I can’t tell lies!” Arlong responds by asking him “Just what can you do?” and Luffy responds with “I can beat you.”

Throughout One Piece, we see the crew go to hell and back together, and even though they have their fair share of bumps on the road, their trust in each other is tested. Each Straw Hat has unwavering trust in Luffy, and has stated that he will become the Pirate King no matter what. Luffy knows that he can’t become the Pirate King without each and every member, just as they know that they cannot achieve their own goals without helping him achieve his. All of their dreams are connected to his, and if you take one single piece out of the puzzle it all falls apart. Their fates are intertwined, and as they care for each other, they work together as they follow their desires. Oda is telling us that through collaboration, we as humans can work together to achieve our desires.

Vegapunk on the other hand, is a man hailed as a genius scientist, who is extremely self reliant when it comes to working towards his goals. He created a team of six satellites, each embodying a different aspect of his mind. While this sounds like the perfect way for someone of his caliber to be successful, it’s clear that it’s heavily flawed. Our different attributes encompass who we are as people, and disturbing that equilibrium could have massive impacts as we just saw. What is evil without goodness? Violence without thinking? Greed without wisdom? Our choices are dictated by our experiences that each attribute connects to, and separating these would inevitably lead to clashing ideals.

There’s a reason why Oda made Vegapunk outshine some of the Straw Hats in some regard. A machine that can produce any meal, instantly (Sanji). Technology that can create artificial climates spanning an entire island (Nami & Usopp). Giant robots and cyborgs that look like something out of a little boy’s dream (Franky).

While Vegapunk has a mind of endless ideas, he lacks what the Straw Hat's have: intertwined desires, and the indestructible trust in each other. They also each have their own special strengths that become amplified when together. They bring out each other’s potential, and surpass what one person can achieve on their own. That is why they are the crew of the future Pirate King, the man who will become the freest above all.

Would be a shame if someone were to derail with Mihawk vs Shanks, Zoro vs Sanji, King wank etc.

OT great thread man, York is sort of an exaggerated version of the younger VP who met Dragon.
It's interesting to put it that way, because as we grow, the balance within ourselves shifts. For example, Vegapunk was perhaps more hasty and impulsive as a newer scientist, whereas now he's more seasoned and relies more on logic and wisdom.

@Wh1p , W analysis and W thread.

It's a big narration focus for the whole OP story that they're going to reach the final destination together, and that they complement each other. Vegapunk might be a genius, but a lone wolf, and if you're on your own, how can you defend yourself against WG? Luffy on the other hand unites people around him, not only his crew and grand fleet, but also whole nations. It's his true strength.

Very well done & i totally agree with it.
I also believe Luffy's Crew is supposed to represent Manifestation of all his Flaws
It's like they complete him

And i loved how you pointed out that Vegapunk is an Example of how you can never remove all your Flaws if you only rely on yourself.
However, i believe that Biggest Showcase of this Concept will be shown in Final Arc
Luffy will be Put in a Situation(s) where he requires 09 Solutions
And each Solution cannot be provided by anyone in the World (Including Luffy) except a Particular SH

And when you really think about it, since this is a Very Important Theme at OP's Core
It would make Perfect Sense that it's the reason Old Joy Boy or Nika Failed at whatever Mission/Objective they had

Look at Nika's Silhouette for example:

He had a Weapon, but Luffy doesn't, He have Zoro instead
Nika had what looks like a Clima Tact, but Luffy doesn't, He have Nami instead
Nika had what also looks like a Book (I personally believe a Book of Fate exists), but Luffy doesn't, He have Usopp instead
Nika had Flames with Unknown Purpose, Luffy doesn't, He have Sanji instead
And i'm sure it continues with Rest of SHs once we see Old Nika's Full Appearance & Possessions

So Nika and/or Joy Boy relied on Himself to try to change the World but that wasn't the Right Answer
And then i believe, his Legacy got split among 9 Figures each one having a certain Dream
However, each one Alone wasn't able to do anything, but their Will & Dreams kept getting Inherited

Until the day came when Nine completely Unrelated People, Inherited those 9 Dreams
And Luffy is the Missing Piece who was able to Connect & Unite them so that their Dreams become One
In other words, each SH's Dream combined would lead to Realization of "One Piece"

So what might seem as a Personal Desire of SHs such as becoming WSS or crossing Grand Line or finding All Blue will turn out to be a Necessary Piece that needs to be Discovered before Ultimate Treasure & Ultimate Dream can be revealed, called "One Piece"

Exactly, I was just talking to a friend about this the other day. Each Straw Hat completes Luffy. Luffy's wings for example, are Zoro who is a sword for Luffy, whereas Sanji is the shield of the crew.

Exactly, they are indeed his Sword & Shield, that's why Oda made Luffy Weak to Blades & didn't give him any Weapon even though Roger, Rayleigh, Shanks, other Yonko all had Weapons

But this also means that near Conclusion of Story, Luffy will be put in a Situation where Someone must be Cut & He needs to be Protected.
But it needs to be a Situation where "Only" Zoro & Sanji can Fix, meaning it needs to be related to something only Two of them can Do in entire World

Since Mihawk will be Defeated, then Zoro will be Only Black Blade Wielder in the World
As for Sanji, He is Tanky but so are many Characters however what sets him apart is his Fire Immunity
He is clearly on a Path of reaching Highest Fire Resistance ever Possible

That means that Zoro will face Someone whom No Weapon can Touch except Black Blade
And Sanji will go to a Place which Nothing can Survive except his Fire Resistant Body

These are clearly "Death" & "Sun"
I strongly believe that just like at End of Thriller Bark Arc, Luffy will end up in similar Situation
But instead of Kuma, it will be Death itself coming to claim his Soul & Zoro will Fight it
And while that's happening, Luffy will need to be taken to The Sun, so Sanji is only one capable of doing so
That's why Oda gave him both Flight & Heat Resistance

And this is exactly why Oda chose to call them "Wings" Specifically (And attributed it to Sanji mostly)
I believe Sanji is Story's Final Death as he Flies Luffy towards The Sun (The Boy who flew too close to the Sun)
While Zoro will be remembered as The Swordsman who protected Luffy from Death itself

I agree but I would say it is more so that we are better able to control the balance as we grow up, the driving force changes from the heart to the mind. While all the emotions or driving forces are under control in the main VP, the satellites themselves have certain overwhelming forces that has resulted in them having certain quirks which gives them their names.
