In the One Piece world there are many pirates, however so far only three pirates have the title of Great Pirate and they are Roger, Whitebeard, and Big Mom.

So how does one become a great pirate?

Beat other strong pirates,
Have coc,
Recruit infamous people
Make the most of their skills
Have a Great Reputation
Strong Pirates fear them

Luffy seemingly was "nominated" to be a Yonko after he displayed enough power to challenge Big Mom domestically and with the reveal of having 5,000+ pirates under him.

This is the point of the PK first of all and foremost

Having big accomplishment in the new world, having experience, being very strong (good with haki).

Also no postponing.

BM and WB are the first emperors, kaido came later... shanks only 6 years ago.

People Like Roger BM WB have been on peak of power and influence for 25+ years
Something Kaido and Shanks havent done.


People will still downplay BM despite her having Great Pirate title as Roger and WB

the pirate joins only follow them because of there unwavering strength and reputation after WB death the WBP fell like an house of card

You have to be an extremely powerful pirate with an extremely strong crew, a lot of great accomplishements and with many allies or connections and influence on others across the world. Only the Yonkos, Pirate King and other legendary pirates such as Shiki or Xebec can be considered to be Great Pirates.

I Don't think that Whitebeard was in his prime at the time and it was long before he was acclaimed as the strongest man in the world.

base on Oda own words Pick of Prime for Whitebeard was 38 and Whitebeard already is near 40 here ...

I guess 40 is a safe age for people to be "GREAT" ...

it's not really a matter of power ... Whitebeard was an underling for most of his life u[ to this point ... while Roger was a man of his own with so many great achievement ...

so it make sense
