Such statements are not accurate or anything. VC's should not be taken as a 100% accurate source. There are alot of misleading, debatable, wrong or different informations than in the manga. The VC even say obvious stuff, but write it in a different more spectacular way just to hype people up more, just like the magazine's often do.

He actually does as Zoro took his league many times like Alabasta, Enies Lobby, After timeskip return, etc..
He gives hype as much as Zoro when Luffy aren't around, the crew looks to them on taking action as both equals in power hierarchy. You reading wrong series as usual on your end.
He didn't protect them though as Puma Ursa Shock them all. Kuma only let them live by certain morals.
Pretty sure Garp has it as be reveal later. Being father and grandfather to Dragon and Luffy and all his hype pushes that.

In the end, Luffy has 2 right arms, both Zoro and Sanji exerting leadership on the crew members and they balance the pack, not only Zoro, but Sanji has several panels that he acts as a vice captain or right arm of Luffy.

In fact even a fanboy like Bartolomeo knows about Zoro's position, Oda put that sentence for a reason, after all Bartolomeo literally knows all about the Mugiwara crew. ;)
