Many was expecting Oda to show an extra awakening for Kaido's DF but it is fact that his DF based on the myth of the koi fish , that struggled and at the end he it became a Dragon. so you could say he was using his awakening the whole time.
why didn't Oda expkain that? Because of Momo's DF and Vegapunk's work, so it will be explained when we got explanation for Momo's artificial DF
why Momo is able to become a Dragon from the get go? Vegapunk copied the treats of the DF not the DF itself using the lineage Factor so he obviously copied the treat that enable the person to turn into a Dragon and it was flawed since Momo could only become a small Dragon , and it seems the abilities grow with time so as Momo have grown his Dragon form did too.
he copied Kizaru beaming ability alone and integrated it in the pacifista.
Caesar was not as successful , but still he was able to turn lineage factor of some animals into some failed artificial DF.
Judge was more succefful than Caesar and intgreated some of lineage factor treats into the lineage factor of his sons. and it seems he was only to do that as they were in the fetus status.
