Break Week Luffy vs Kaido had no coherent tone or consistent theme

Just to make sure I wasn’t bugging out, I reread a good chunk of the Luffy vs Kaido fight.

At some points you have moments like this:
Where the fight seems like a happy-go-luck smack down.

And then at others moments like this:
Where the fight feels like Oda wants it to be serious.

The result is that the fight feels very jumbled/messy from a narrative and tonal perspective.

Despite what Oda apologists will tell you, this makes the fight feel kinda bleh on binge read cuz it doesn’t really flow or make sense.

It did have a theme of conquerors tho, which is why the fight ended in a CoC clash
That’s not a theme lol. Luffy has fought other conqueror’s Haki users in the past.

A theme would be ideas like racism (Hody), God (Enel), Nakama (Lucci), etc…Kaido doesn’t have a theme because he is a terrible antagonist, Wano doesn’t have any themes because it is a terrible arc.

Kaido vs Luffy has a theme it’s freedom

it is a theme, Kaido literally spelled it out to us earlier in the arc where he made that comment about Kid having CoC. Oda jumbled it but it's clear what Oda wanted to do, he wanted to have Luffy be the supreme CoC user amongst pirate king candidates

Kaido vs Luffy had a theme of freedom although poorly done, it appears oda was trying to create a dichotomy between Kaido and luffys ideas on what freedoms and equality.

Kaido believes that freedom and equality is Something earned through strength on the battlefield and everyone should have the opportunity to attain it or lose it. Hence why he stole the freedom of the wano citizens, they didn’t have the strength to attain it.

Whereas Luffys idea is that freedom is something everyone is and shouldn’t have to challenge to gain

Yeah but in that fight I feel like it was executed particularly well: A control freak vs the embodiment of freedom.
Doflamingo’s fight in this sense is particularly good because for the first time Luffy was genuinely disgusted by what his opponent represented rather than being “merely” angry for the acts he committed. Thus by fighting him he was actively and consciously opposing his antagonist’s ideology.

Wasn’t freedom the driving theme behind the fight against Doflamingo?
I feel that there it was executed much better…
Dressrosa's main theme was love and hate. Law's entire character in that arc for example was his vengeance against Doflamingo, willing to die to avenge Corazon. Sengoku made Law realize that it was nothing but Law's own hate for Mingo, which blinded him to the fact that Corazon would want him to live. Mingo's main stich was manipulating the hate of others.

In Wano, main themes were loyalty, leadership and legacy, and how it's gained. Kaido doesn't serve these themes too well cause his character is all over the place with shit unexplained. Mingo was much better.

The two things are connected: Corazon wanted to free Law because he loved him. Doflamingo instead couldn’t because incapable of loving, as he saw anyone else as beneath him and nothing more than a mere instrument of his will. In other words puppets to exploit.

It had two coherent tones actually. The Goofy joking around aspect pairs with the reveal of Gear 5, and the whimsical nature of the ability. Luffy and Kaido both enjoying themselves to the fullest. "Joy Boy" enjoying himself as he battles Kaido.

On the flip side you have the serious moments with Kaido belittling Luffy and wanting to break him, with Luffy taking his Conquerors Haki to the next level to show he can stand on equal footing with Kaido, and not be broken.

Maybe when you reread it, you should have paid more attention?

The fight is obviously over

oh wait you’re the same guy who kept saying obviously legit spoilers were fake, and thought Big Mom was going to win against Kid and Law. Never mind :milaugh:
I was wrong about spoiler. But did Big Mom lost? No she didn't. We didn't saw her unconscious. Kaido probably lost but the fight is not over. Luffy lost a bunch of times but Kaido will lose only one? Nope.
Remember that Luffy can't win Kaido simply by punching harder.
