It doesn't seem he was captured after joining Rocks at all

but Kaido only got his fruit after Rocks fell, so when did Vegapunk did his research from Kaido to imitate his fruit ?

I had a theory awhile back that state Kaido never used his fruit, he always had a dragon form because that's part of his race, he was born like that
