The point is WB died screaming One Piece, he cared that shit. And people thought WB was searching for it, WB needed to make an appearances like that to maintain his Yonko image, even Lakainu thought WB was searching One Piece and baited Ace with that.
Mihawk is not rivaling Shanks because he is not a Yonko nor Great Pirate. Great Pirates rival each other.

"Vastly inferior to him" sure thats why Mihawk himself panicked when he heard Buggy's ambition involving fighting any of the three names. Suddenly you saying those 3 are carried by their crew outta nowhere is a bit hilarious since Mihawk mentioned everything about those three but nothing about their crews, you're out of touch 
After it was too late, he agreed to the lie, if Crocodile refused it, it wouldn't happen as well, stop giving extra credit to Mihawk, when it was both Mihawk + Croco agreed to that lie, not only Mihawk.
Mihawk fans don't write the story Loda does, regardless of what the fans want they have zero influence on the writing. We just came off from worst ever arc Loda has written which was 4 years long abandoning million plot lines without single care in the world. At some point you will have to readjust your expectations there is no use overacting too much he will have to eventually give Mihawk something
