GRRM > Tolkien shouldn't be a controversial opinion

Tolkien is the blueprint, his worldbuilding is unmatched, his ideas/concepts defined the genre and he will forever be regarded as the one who inspired most of the medieval fantasy worlds of the 20th and 21st centuries

However in term of pure story-telling,character writing and just overall enjoyment I prefer GRRM's works

I never liked Aragorn,Gimli or Frodo, sure Legolas was cool as fuck and Gandalf had that good "powerful grandpa" vibe but they're not compelling or particularly well-writen characters

Sauron is also one of the most overrated villains in fiction, he's more like a concept than an actual character
