Resident Evil 4 (Spoilers for Remake)

Thought I'd make a thread for this, since there isn't one surprisingly. I've not played it yet but I really want to.

I've been looking up various parts of the game online and talking to friends who are fellow fans of the original and have played and completed this remake too and generally they're pretty happy with it. One of them even believes it's vastly superior to the original and I can kinda believe it too.

I absolutely loved the original to bits, replayed it MANY times, both on Gamecube and Wii and this remake really feels faithful generally but also fresh and improved in some ways. I don't like the Ada redesign and especially her new VA, who seems to be awful and have NO experience at all too, completely ridiculous casting there.

I actually really like the redesign of Ashley too, she seems vastly improved in various ways and also her own solo chapter looks much better too.

It's a shame they removed that one U-3 boss or w/e its called, the scorpion-like boss that hound you in the hanging shipping containers part.
I heard they removed some other content including some classic and some cheesy lines and such though.

They did keep the neat, clever little things like shooting the support beam for the well lid, so the pocket watch or whatever it was, doesn't fall in when you shoot it down and get dirty or w/e?

My friend told me some of the unlockable stuff like the Chicago Typewriter which is now Chicago Sweeper apparently and suit of knight armour for Ashley are now locked behind S-Ranking professional and even doing it in under 7 hours?!

I heard they removed Mercenaries but its gonna be a free DLC and be improved, bigger, better etc somehow too? I also heard Assignment Ada and Separate Ways were also removed BUT I did see an article claim SW was gonna be released as a paid DLC, be longer and more improved, although a more recent article seems to suggest the opposite, that theres no word about SW or AA from Capcom?

I've heard there's new stuff like learning about Leon's past and more about Krauser too, they've removed the boulder chase scenes, Salazar and Saddler are quite different now, the merchant is back thankfully but has a new voice actor, the mine thrower and plagas laser weapon have not returned either AFAIK? Luis has been given a bigger role now too, more fleshed out writing/story and accompanies you more now? The same for Ashley now, who also accompanies you now more and you can't hide her in dumpsters or whatever to keep her safe anymore too?

I suppose I could look this up and not be so lazy but alas lol.

Anyway, I really want to talk about a certain major plotline, which is now more fleshed out, more impactful and thus more tragic in this remake. The death of Luis is quite different now and I saw a clip of where he was given a final farewell speech and it was heartbreaking, so very sad. The writing genuinely was on form, it was a real tear jerker and haunting. Made me think of Wolfwood from Trigun, Hughes from FMA, Starrk from Bleach, Ace, Jiraiya etc.
Really curious to see what you guys make of it, I think its FAR superior to the original game, not even questionable:

I don't see it as a replacement for the original, more of a reimagination with a different tone. I was bummed to not see Leon and Salazar's banter, but meh.

All easy if you're willing to invest time into it. Even, S+ is doable with bonus weapons and some patience.

U-3 should be part of Separate Ways...i don't see it as a big loss anyway.

Luis and Ashley are by far the biggest improvements, character-wise.

Aye my friend referred to it as that and it makes much more sense that way. They made it more serious, darker, mature and such? More of a true horror experience and less B-movie cheesiness too?

Ah yeah thta makes sense, sounds like the original too then, when the bonus weapons made unlocking things easier and completing the game easier ofc?

Oh yeah I forgot about its involvement in SW, thats fair, especially if they're saving it for it.

OH yes! Luis and Ashley are so much better now, I LOVE how they look and the directions taken with them! Such more beautifully fleshed out characters, so much better written with great voice acting! Even people I didn't expect to love the new Ashley and to complain about her constantly are loving her! They are defending the new Ashley surprisingly!

Its so cool to see the "actual" Luis here too! Honoured to have you here haha! Luis is such a great guy!

It's still goofy, just not as much as the original. The plot is very much the same.

Yeah, you can unlock the Chicago Sweeper and/or the Handcannon then go ham with them for your S+ Professional run. Easier said than done, but it's a doable challenge.

IIRC Ashley was hated in the original, so no real surprises imo. Luis also gets a lot of love, rightfully so. I'd say Ada is a downgrade though, mostly due to her voice-acting, don't know what they were thinking hiring Lily Gao, she's just terrible...

Encantado.

Ah damn, I didn't know you replied.

That sounds awesome, I did enjoy the goofiness, cheesiness of the original but I'm welcoming this new take on it too, its great to see it from a new perspective. They could have been lazy with it but they went the complete opposite instead, I'm hearing about all these kinds of extra, thoughtful little details in it too which sound great!

Yeah hahaha, there were plenty of memes and complaints about OG Ashley, she really did get annoying and thus grating on the ears. The screaming/yelling especially. Plus now people pointed out shes voiced by the same VA as Sandy from Spongebob, it doesnt help LOL!

Yeah, I was really disappointed with Ada this time round. I prefer the new look in some ways but the VA is terrible. I've seen some completely new or very inexperienced VAs kill it in other projects, including Borderlands 3, where they completely shocked and impressed me and made me fall in love with their voice acting! Pure talent, passion and charisma!

Lilly was just so flat, so unenthusiastic with this, like she was phoning it in/didn't care regardless. Ruined Ada for me. I adored the original VA of Ada in RE4, I've not played RE2 or the remake but RE4 Ada was iconic for me.

Welcome to WorstGen anyway man, pleasure to have you here! Appreciate the bit of Spanish there and that gif too haha! Very noce!

Loved the game. My favorite parts about it were making all the dumb stuff from the original make sense in the remake. The side quests were def. a big improvement and the knife parries are the best. Honestly, everything about it was great and they improved a lot of things from the original except for Ada's VA, which is a shame. They may have got her because she was already Ada in that recent live-action RE movie that I didn't watch but you could tell that she had no experience in voice acting because the voice direction in this game was pretty damn good all-around although I also wasn't feeling Wesker's voice. They also did improve a lot of scenarios like the island and the water room. Just awesome

It's def. an improvement over the original although there are still parts of me that still likes to play the OG more. I think it's maybe because of pacing and, yes, the campy stuff are still part of its charm. Also, I'm stealing this from a video I watched some time ago and I wanna know what ya think, but I think RE4 is still a greater game just because it was the best looking game compared to other games of its own era and it actually influenced the video game industry with the over-the-shoulder camera whereas remake is pretty much the same like every game today in terms of graphics (although RE engine is probably the best though) even though it improved almost all things from the original. In saying that, I prefer every Resident Evil games to be like this instead of the first-person games of the new ones even though they're also pretty great

It's funny that you mentioned how they improved the characters from the original because I want a Code Veronica remake and, in addition to wanting an improved version of the game, I want to see them try and improve the actual worst character in the series in Steve lol
