Now that it is revealed that the gomu gomu no mi is a legendary fruit it is safe to assume that Shanks knew about it and hence the reason he stole it from Who’s Who. Another indication would be that after Luffy ate the gomu gomu no mi Shanks instantly identified it which leads to the question - what will Shanks role be? We know his sword “Gryphon” is a reference to a Griffin - a guard deity of some sort. What exactly is Shanks guarding? Why does he have an affiliation with the elders? When Shanks met Luffy in Marineford and said it is not yet time, was he actually waiting for Luffy to awaken his fruit so he can somehow monopolize its power? I feel like these questions are to be answered very soon I even feel like “Evil Shanks” theory is a massive possibility now
