Togashi's division of characters and numerology: Analysis of the manga

Togashi did this image/scheme using the Yang-White/Yin-Black opposition of Tao in order to represent (in a relative, partial and simplistic way) the division of characters of "Bad side" and characters of "Good side".

It's pretty much a general and relative/partial division of relate the "dark side" to the "antagonists" and the "white side" to the "protagonists". Obviously, the reality of the story and characters is more complex than that. I think it is still useful in order to understand the characters Togashi consider as "dark side-antagonists" and "white side-protagonists".

In total, there are 29 characters on the so-called "bad side" and 29 on the so-called "good side".

"Bad side":
  • Meruem-Pitou-Pouf-Youpi (The Royal Chimera Ants)
  • Genthru with Sub-Bara (The 3 Bombers)
  • Genei Ryodan (The members)
  • Beyond Netero + Nasubi and Benjamin Hui Guo Rou (Beyond + Hui Guo Rou patriarchs)
  • Zangh Lei and Camilla (The highest ranked princes, with Benjamin)
  • Chrollo and Pariston (The leaders of Ryodan and Zodiacs)
  • Hisoka-Illumi Zoldyck-Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou (The adversaries of Gon-Killua-Kurapika)
"Good side":
  • Komugi
  • Knuckle-Shoot-Palm (The "students" of Morel and Knov)
  • Kite (The "student" of Ging)
  • Hanzo
  • Morel and Knov

  • Zodiacs (The 10 members without Pariston and Ging)

Togashi put the Genei Ryodan and the Hoikoro family with Beyond Netero in the "Bad side" instead Zodiacs and the Zoldyck patriarchs with Isaac Netero in the "Good side".
As a matter of fact, Isaac Netero + Zeno Zoldyck (Chinese culture patriarch of an important family with Chinese mustache)(White hair-Yang) are symbolically opposed to Beyond Netero + Nasubi Hui Guo Rou (Chinese culture patriarch of an important family with Chinese mustache)/(Black hair-Yin). Also with the other patriarchs, sons of Zeno and Nasubi: Silva and Benjamin.

Togashi has always created his characters in relation to the opposition Yang-Yin:
In the image, Togashi opposed the main groups of the manga: Genei Ryodan (Top Criminals) and Zodiacs (Top Hunters)
Both groups of 12 characters with a main fight between the main characters: Chrollo-Hisoka and Pariston-Ging.

1) Chrollo (Black Hair, Yin) vs Hisoka (White Hair, Yang)=Pariston (White Hair, Yang) vs Ging (Black Hair, Yin)

2) Hisoka (White Hair - Yang) interacts with mercenary llumi (Black Hair - Yin) = Ging (Black Hair -Yin) interacts with mercenary Muherr (White Hair - Yang)

Also, Hisoka Morow (White hair/Yang - a member of the Ryodan) and Illumi Zoldyck (Black hair/Yin - a mercenary) + Tserriednich Hoikoro (White hair/Yang - Depicted as Jesus and the 14 Princes= 7x2)

In the same way, Ging (Black hair/Yin - a member of the Zodiacs) and Muherr (White hair/Yang - a mercenary)+ Razor (Black hair/Yin - his ability: The Devil and his 14 Devils=7x2)


Razor is similar to Ging (both Creator of Greed Island) as Hisoka (that is on Tier 1 of Black Whale with his link to the Princes) is similar to Tserriednich (both number 4 of their respective groups, both Serial killers). Also, Tserriednich and Razor are linked to the number 14 as 7x2: The 14 princes related to the 7 Deadly Sins and the 14 Devils of Razor: Coincidence?

The manga is also full of numerical symbols and numerology that can be used to understand the developments of the story and characters, for example:


4=Tetraphobia: The fear or avoidance of the number 4. In East Asian countries, the word for "four"sound similar or identical to "death", so there is a connection between the number 4 and Death (Tetraphobia).

Alluka
Alluka is Silva's 4th daughter/son because he/she is the most dangerous of the Zoldyck family (As a matter of fact, if someone say "no" to her requests 4 times, he/she will die. Why? Because 4=Death)

Hisoka
Hisoka was the number 44 in the Hunter Exam and the 4th member of the Ryodan since he represents the Grim Reaper/Death as called in the Heaven's Tower. He is the 4th member of the Ryodan because he is the most dangerous and death of the Spiders



Tserriednich
Tserriednich is the 4th Prince of Kakin because he is the evilest and most dangerous of the family:


Meruem
Meruem was the 4th and last Royal member of Chimera Ants to born, since he was the King and most dangerous of the Chimera Ants. He was the 4th after the 3 Royal Guard to born (In order: Pitou-Pouf-Youpi and Meruem, the 4th):




13=Triskaidekaphobia: The fear or avoidance of the number 13. A superstition mainly diffused in some Western countries, it is also a reason for the fear of Friday the 13th. This superstition is also related to the Tarot cards: the 13th card of the Tarot is "Death": Tarot Card

Pariston

Pariston (Hunter Association/Zodiacs) won the Election and became the 13th Chairman of the Hunter Association because he is the most dangerous of the Zodiacs, Hunter Associations and the history of Chairmen

As a matter of fact, the Chapter 321 was titled "Monster" (怪け者もの, Kemono) in relation to both Alluka and Pariston: Alluka the "monster" of the Zoldyck family and Pariston the "monster" of the Zodiacs/Hunter Associations: Chapter 321


Both Zodiacs and Genei Ryodan are a group of 12 members with a fight between the main characters: Pariston vs Ging (Zodiacs) and Chrollo vs Hisoka (Ryodan), where both Pariston and Hisoka are related to an unlucky number and "death": Pariston (13- Western superstition) and Hisoka (4 -Eastern superstition). Also, both of them are related to the idea of a sort of "twisted/murderous love" based on Eros-Love and Thanatos-Death:





666=Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (Britannica)
1) Tserrienich (depicted as Jesus): The 2 beasts of Tserriednich are the 2 beasts of the "Book of Revelation": the beast of the sea (with the number of the beast, 666) and the beast of earth in relation to the Antichrist, as a matter of fact, one of his beast has also the number 666

2) Hisoka is born on 6 June in relation to 666 typically related to the Antichrist in Movies like The Omen etc, in relation also to his opposition to Chrollo: Chrollo and 12 apostles vs Hisoka= Jesus Christ vs the Antichrist with the resurrection of Hisoka (An unholy reverse of the resurrection of Jesus). Hisoka is born 6 June 1971 (the sixth day of June at six o'clock in the morning) like Damien Thorn in the original movie "The Omen".

I personally don’t check the HxH section when I know the manga isn’t currently being released.

Also I’m so used to the long posts about power wankers that long posts in general give me the ick.

As for this thread. Author should use spoiler tags for images and put an highlight on his main arguments

Yes, Togashi drew this scheme on 26/08/2016 (you can spot it in the blank area on the "White side" opposite his signature on the "Black side"). At that point, Morena had not yet appeared in the manga (she first appeared in chapter 378, which was released in 2018).

By the way, Morena also is created according to these schemes Yang-Yin:
Morena (White hair/Yang) + Hinrigh (White hair/Yang) -Wang (Black hair/Yin) (The three mafia of Kakin, Hinrigh and Wang are the underbosses instead Morena is the boss because she killed the previous boss)

Hinrigh and Wang are like (Yang and Yin) (they are always represented specularly as their Mafia)+ Morena. The three young leaders of the Kakin mafias.



The same for other characters, for example:

1) Knukle (Black hair/Yin) and Shoot (White hair/Yang) + Palm (Black hair/Yin): The students of Morel and Knov

2) Gon (Black hair/Yin) and Killua (White hair/Yang) + Alluka (Black hair/Yin): The main characters

3) Hisoka Morow (White hair/Yang) and Illumi Zoldyck (Black hair/Yin) + Tserriednich Hoikoro (White hair/Yang) (similar to Hisoka, both number 4): 3 psychopaths
4) Ging (Black hair/Yin) and Muherr (White hair/Yang) + Razor (Black hair/Yin) (similar to Ging and both creator of Greed Island)


By the way, Morena is related to Tserriednich (the benefactor of the Heil-Ly Family) like Tserriednich is related to Hisoka:
Morena is represented as Mary Magdalene that interact with Tserriednich (depicted as Jesus) that also is related to Hisoka (that resurrected like Jesus) with Chrollo and the 12 members/apostles.

HXH depicts various representations of the "Jesus" based on some historical theories and also not historical ones but "mythical" or "theological", for example:

Chrollo: Jesus, a sort of insurrectionist or a zelot against the political power of the society of his time= An insurrectionist like Chrollo?
Morena: Was Jesus a woman? Morena (with the crown of thorns)
Tserrienich: Jesus, the King of Kings with his typical depiction. The war of Succession for Tserriednich/Jesus as King
Hisoka: Jesus, the Magician like Hisoka the Magician, this was the name given to Jesus from his detractors, his “miracles” were seen as “magic” during his times, he was seen as an evil magician or a charlatan

Yes, Borksen now has a rival role to Morena (sort of Kurapike with Tserriednich), however the connection between Tserriednich (Jesus) and Morena (Mary Magdalene) is symbolical and be represented in 2 ways: benefactor and antagonistic.


By the way, summarizing this arc: This arc is Yorknew City arc 2.0

Point 1

The initial flashbacks of the Ryodan in Yorknew City arc with kid Chrollo playing with the videotape, and after when he funded the "Spider" has been completed in this arc (chapters 395-397, the story of the Ryodan: Manga).

Point 2
  • Yorknew City arc: Kurapika started working for the Nostrade Mafia Family in order to take the first pairs of scarlet eyes from Neon, "a flesh collector" (she had an ability of prophecy).
  • This arc: Kurapika started working for the Kakin Royal family (related also to the Mafia families of Kakin) in order to take the last pairs of scarlet eyes from Tserriednich "a flesh collector" (like Neon) that developed an ability of "seeing the future".
Point 3
  • Yorknew City arc: Chrollo wanted to steal the treasure of the Mafia community; he stole Neon's ability and wanted to steal Zeno and Silva's abilities but failed.
  • This arc: Chrollo wants to steal the treasures (the 3 sacred treasures) of the Kakin Royal Family and steal a powerful ability in order to kill Hisoka for good.

The Buddhas

1) The second sacred treasure of Kakin is the "Zen Buddha/Mummified monk"or "Sokushinbutsu". Togashi based him on mummified monks through ascetism.
He is the first king of Kakin that conjured the sacred urn of succession inspired by Kodoku/Worm Toxin (based on Chinese Gu magic, where venomous insects were put inside a jar and let fight each other until only one would have survived, like the princes must fight each other thought their Nen beasts until only one will survive). That is the basis of the succession ritual:


2) These three sacred treasures are related to a ritual shrine and are related to the place where the bodies of the princes are located (as Chrollo said in the manga)


1) Nasubi Hoikoro is also based on the Chinese monk Budai or Hotei that sometimes is confused with the Historical Buddha (also called the "Fat Buddha").


2) Instead, Isaac Netero was based on the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, with Kannon as his ability in relation to the bodhisattva of Compassion/Mercy, Kannon/Avalokitevara (more precisely Senju Kannon).

In Yorknew City arc Chrollo wanted to steal the abilities of Zeno and Silva and, now, he wants to steal the 3 Kakin sacred objects with Nen, as a matter of fact, the Zoldyck family is specular to the Hoikoro family with Isaac Netero and Beyond Netero:

  • Isaac Netero =Beyond Netero
  • Zeno Zoldyck= Nasubi Hoikoro (Patriarchs of Chinese traditions of an important family that interact respectively with Isaac and Beyond Netero).
  • Silva Zoldyck=Benjamin Hoikoro (Tall and Muscular sons that always follow their father Zeno/Nasubi)
In short:
  • In Yorknew City arc: Chrollo vs Zeno and Silva in order to steal their abilities, but he failed.
  • In this arc: Chrollo vs Kakin (King Nasubi/Zeno 2.0 and Benjamin/Silva 2.0) in order to steal the 3 sacred treasure that are the basis of the Succession War and then steal an ability to kill Hisoka for good
Main characters of this arc: Kurapika-Hisoka and Tserriednich-Chrollo:

  • Chrollo (and Ryodan) main adversary pass from Kurapika to Hisoka
  • Kurapika main adversary pass from the Ryodan to Tserriednich.

Chrollo-Hisoka-Tserriednich have a symbolical meaning in the manga and their story follow the history of Antichrist-Judas-Jesus.

According to Christian religion, there is:
  • Jesus and 12 Apostles with the resurrection of Jesus.
  • Judas the Betrayer
  • Antichrist and the 7 deadly sins and 2 beasts
In the manga, there is:
  • Chrollo with the reversed cross like the Antichrist but with 12 Apostles (12 members of Genei Ryodan) like Jesus.
  • Hisoka the "betrayer" like Judas that sold Chrollo/Jesus, but he resurrected like Jesus (like Jesus the Magician) and he is born on 6 June (666) like the Antichrist/Damien
  • Tserriednich depicted like Jesus but with the 2 beasts (with the number 666 on his beast) and the 7 deadly sins (the 14 Princes 7x2=14) like the Antichrist

In short: Togashi change the roles of these characters: Chrollo, Hisoka and Tserriednich (Antichrist, Judas, Jesus), in relation to different situations of the story in the manga. For this reason, Chrollo-Hisoka-Tserriednich have different symbolism and characteristics in relation to the Antichrist-Judas-Jesus manifested in different situations:

1) Chrollo and the Ryodan want to steel the Royal family of Kakin, it will be poor (Chrollo/Ryodan) vs rich (Kakin Royal Family/Tserriednich):
  • a rich Jesus/Tserriednich
  • a poor Antichrist/Chrollo
2) Hisoka is the "betrayer", helping the main characters
  • Hisoka (Judas) "sold" Chrollo (Jesus) and helped Kurapika
  • Hisoka was betraying Illumi helping Killua and Alluka in order to cure Gon
As a matter of fact, Zoldyck Family=Hoikoro Family (an important and powerful family)
  • Killua=Kurapika (the main character that interact with the respective families)
  • Alluka=Woble (female character that must be protected by the main characters Killua/Kurapika)
  • Illumi=Tserriednich (evil elder brother, adversaries of Killua/Kurapika and Alluka/Woble)
  • Both Illumi and Tserriednich are related to Hisoka (that is on Tier 1 of Black Whale with his link to the Princes)
Will Hisoka (Judas) "sell" Tserriednich (Jesus) helping Kurapika? (like Hisoka "sold" Chrollo to Kurapika and was betraying Illumi in order to help Killua and Alluka)


3) The talent of Tserriednich is related to the talent and divinity of Jesus, as a matter of fact, Isaac Netero and Beyond Netero are the Biblical patriarchs Isaac and Jacob:
  • Isaac Netero (and Beyond): Biblical patriarch Isaac (like Abraham and Jacob), a century old patriarchs that with years, age and experience became greatest.
  • Tserriednich (like Chrollo and Hisoka): Jesus, talented youngster (25-33 years) that in short time surpassed all the Biblical patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob)



Zodiacs and The Ryodan
The Zodiacs are in the upper tiers of the ship, instead, the Ryodan in the lower tiers; the same division: top hunters (Zodiacs)- top criminals (Ryodan). The Ryodan members will go to the upper floors/Tier 1 interacting with the Zodiacs


By the way, Kurapika and Leorio supplanted Pariston and Ging as the new rat (Kurapika/Pariston) and boar (Leorio/Ging) in the Zodiac like Hisoka/Killua helped Chrollo/Gon with the Nen removal (Nobunaga wanted Gon and Kilua inside the Ryodan), since Chrollo, Hisoka, Pariston, Ging are the main characters as Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio

  • Gon and Killua are friends=/ Chrollo and Hisoka are enemies/ Yin-Yang (Dark hair-White hair): Chrollo-Hisoka/Gon-Killua
  • Kurapika and Leorio are friend=/ Pariston and Ging are enemies/Yang-Yin (White hair-Black hair)
Since Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio are all 4 friends, Chrollo, Hisoka, Pariston, Ging are all enemies. This is also the reason Hisoka was searching Ging:

There are 2 ships heading to the Dark Continent:
  • The Black Whale 1 with Chrollo and Hisoka (and Illumi, a mercenary)
  • The expedition team of Beyond with Pariston and Ging (and Muherr, a mercenary) on another ship.
Will Chrollo and Hisoka meet Pariston and Ging in successive arcs (reuniting the group of 4 adult main characters)?
