Powers & Abilities What is the narrative purpose of the time limit to Gear 4 and 5th

#1
Why did Oda write such a stupid weakness to these powers? Like I don’t understand how dumb of an author someone has to be to write some bullshit like this

Why can’t he just write Gear 4th and 5th and make Luffy be able to use them indefinitely? Super saiyan didn’t have time limit? Bijuu Mode initially had time limit which was annoying but I like that it was never mentioned again, Devil Union in Black Clover had a time limit which is also annoying, Bankai didn’t have a time limit

I just wish Oda was a better author and wouldn’t include stupid elements into his story

Because Gear 4 is like Sage Mode Naruto where once Luffy runs out of Haki he reverts to his base form just like how once Naruto runs out of Natural energy he reverts to normal.

Meanwhile Gear 5 is like SSJ3 where it just burns through ungodly amounts of stamina and yeah Luffys a tough guy; but he doesn’t have infinite stamina. That’s why he needs to eat food to replenish himself.

It's the opposite to what you just said, no drawback/consequence to using amazing power is not realistic and it's less narratively interesting.

Because it consumes haki and energy...

Luffy had no such limitations before Gears. Limitations surfaced with Gear 2 because his body was not able to take the strain.

Gears depletes both haki and energy. Only way luffy time duration for gears will increase if his haki increases.

There is a reason why luffy needs food to recover.

So, no it's a realistic concept

Pretty much anime standard. And Luffy has those since Ennies Lobby don't pretend it is just G4 and G5.

Super Sayan had time limits and drawbacks until they trained to master it. But again the evolutions of it still have drawbacks and time limit.

Pokemon, I guess mega evolution has something on those lines right?

Naruto Kyuubi modes (for the majority of the series).

Bleach Ichigo "Hollow" mode.

And many more.

It’s bad writing because no other character has drawbacks to their fruits. He does it because those abilities were to OP for the opponents he was matched up against at the time. G4 was to OP for Doffy but the time limit should have been lifted prior to Kaido. Gear 5 is to OP for anyone below Yonko level so the limit likely isn’t going anywhere.

I’m a Luffy fan and I hate that shit.

Law has severe drawbacks with his fruit.
Blackbeard has major drawbacks from his.

Law doesn’t have severe drawbacks. Be for real he claimed, that he had stamina issues yet spams his ability in every fight.

BBs weakness doesn’t stop him from using his power. It’s not even a fair trade off.
Nothing stops Luffy from using his fruit power except luffy. Luffy spams awakening and exhausts himself because awakening takes stamina.

At this point gear four should have no time limit. Let's be real Odas just gonna have Luffy spam gear as long as it makes him chuckle and no bad guy is going down to gear four anymore anyways :kayneshrug:

Yes smart ass I knew this already, I’m not asking about the in-story reason as to why he’s having a drawback; are you stupid or something?

I’m asking why is it narratively important for there to be a weakness in the first place, I’m the author and I can do what I want, so if I was in Oda’s shoes I won’t make any drawbacks

But the thing is Luffy is getting shotted on by any competent top tier with that time limit if they fought him seriously.

let’s not pretend that if this was a decisive fight between Luffy and Kizaru, Kizaru would’ve won by simply outlasting Gear 5th and any gear below that isn’t enough for Kizaru. And Kizaru isn’t even prope Yonko level

That’s a problem, if we were to power scale Luffy then he’s not defeating any top tier; he’s literally a Zoro victim

Glad you aren't in oda's shoes because I don't want a clown to write this manga and make it worse than what it is

It is actually pretty clever to add a time limit to some of Luffy's Gear-stages. Take for example Dragon Ball: Akira Toriyama had to come up with more and more ways for Son Goku to always become stronger and show how much he did so by inventing more stages of transformations. We had Super, Ultra, etc.. With a manga, that focusses mostly on fights, Dragon Ball mostly served the readers, who wanted to see interesting fights - and we got those!

With One Piece however, it is different: Oda is not solely focussing on interesting fights. I remember that once Oda told in an interview that he has gotten tired of drawing fights. His tiredness may however not be the reason for this time limit. But with this statement, we can see, that he does not focus on the fights in his manga this much, but on the plot. Actually, he sometimes sacrafices fights for the plot, as seen with Kizaru vs. Luffy (They will clash later with Kizaru not even shown, what he can do, yet.). And this priority comes also shining through with Luffy's fighting abilities. Oda tries to always add something to Luffy's inventory - an ability more. And with every arc, we see him gain more and more powers. But, he does this very slowly and carefully as to not exhaust Luffy's possibilities to get better. This way, he can add more wothout having to invent another stage or "Gear" just yet.

With Dragon Ball and the ending of the Boo-saga, I sometimes had the feeling that the Super Saiyan 3 was only added to give Son Goku that one transformation to top everyone. It felt odd to be honest. And I think Oda does not want it to be felt this way. So, to not always have to invent new Gear-stages, he slows the progression with how fast Luffy can master them and adds therefore a time limit to some. This way he also can also add more tension to fights and arcs (seen in Dressrosa). And this felles more harminizing with the plot, in my opinion. But I am also not the person, who reads the manga because of the fights, if I my be honest here. I am rather a fan, who likes good plot rather than a good fight. 😊 Therefore, a time limit does not bother me as much as it does you, maybe... .

G4 is still too OP for it to not have a drawback. Lets say he can use it for 30 minutes, but after it still uae haki. If not, Gear 4 can already defeat top tiers imo.
