For me I have two. Angel Beats has a special place for being the first work of fiction to evoke some degree of emotion from me, this show is exrtremely sad when thought about from certain perpectives.

The second one is Madoka Magica, this show I went in blind and it was nothing of what I expected it to be. Instead of rainbows and unicorns I saw some heavy and dark stuff. And how well it's made.

If I have to choose between even these then I go for Angel Beats since I simply did not express emotion towards works of fiction until I watched this anime.

Hmmm excellent question, no anime has ever really made me emotional, I'm not that type of dude however there is one anime that really got me into anime and It'll always be one I recommend to people who wanna watch anime outside the mainstream don't know where to start and that anime is non other than

Heavens Lost Property - it has basically a bit of every genre, it has raunchy scenes, it has action it has comey it has sports episodes it has other worlds and fantasy and sci-fi elements it has great comedic timing and it even has romance!

I suppose the original Trigun. It had a different vibe than the other anime. I had been exposed to a lot of martial arts works in my childhood, the proto-shounen if you will. And then came the varied mecha/slice-of-life of my early teens. Trigun fit neither. It was wild west cool with a touch of Japanese weird scifi, all of which came with plenty of heart and humor. I still remember the flashback episode detailing Vash's life on the space station and his trauma. Kinda wish the author had stayed more in that emotional space, rather than focusing on the bombastic side of the genre with his subsequent works.

School Rumble, because it made me laugh so hard, and still does today when I watch some clips.

Ghost Stories (English Dub), another hilarious show and could be the first official abridged anime. Too bad, it would be canceled by today's standards.

Kill Me Baby is the first anime I really enjoyed watching (outside of Pokemon/Bakugan which I didn't keep up with) so it's up there. It's simply fun.

I like Is The Order a Rabbit? and Bocchi The Rock because they're both very cute and funny while touching on relatable stuff like social anxiety and losing a loved one.

K-ON! counts too, I felt more emotion watching those four girls graduate than when I myself did lmao. And don't even get me started on U&I, I listened to that song the year my grandmother died and it pretty much demolished me emotionally.

Then there's Asobi Asobase which is possibly the funniest anime I've ever seen. The bizarre aesthetics and unique artstyle really help too.

Lastly DBZ, I scorned it for superhero stuff as a child but now I enjoy it and see the characters as motivation whenever I'm feeling unconfident or lazy.

Makes sense that most are childhood anime.

Wasn't expecting anyone else in this forum to have watched Is the Order a Rabbit?

Oshi no ko, the first season really touched me I watched the first episode like 40 times cause I didn’t have a sire to watch it on, the second season was good but it didn’t hit as good.
The anime farming life in another world, I love it so much and it’s so just wholesome.
There is also this manga/manwha I don’t know which called β€œI got reincarnated as a fried shrimp” it’s so sad and heartbreaking but i love it so much, the writing is so peak and the man is so good.
Howls moving castle also, the animation is great, it was the first ghibli movie i watched, and it’s just amazing
One more, it’s called β€œI raised the villains preciously” I loved it so much, it was just cute and was the first manwha I read

Angel Beats, Shelter, Detective Conan, Cardcaptor Sakura, Digimon, One Piece ofc and maybe Death Note

I guess mangas count in this too, right?
technically no. this is the anime only section, but you can post whatever you want since there is no dictator here to tell you what to do, if it makes sense with the thread title is up to you.

First ep was so good imo. Everything revolving Ai Hoshino was great. It could be a standalone movie on its own. I do feel the rest of the story is not on par with that first arc but it's still good.

The GOAT.

Watched it by going into it blind right before my life reached its lowest point, and then the movie + the sequel after I barely made it out. Now I know it's not only one of the 2 or 3 greatest anime series I've ever watched, it also bookends a challenging portion of my life.
