Why are Oda’s black characters super lightskin?

Has anyone else noticed that there’s really no black characters in One Piece who look actually black? Most of the “black” characters look like they’re quarter black at best.

Just look at Usopp, he’s supposed to be African according to Oda, but I’ve met white people with a darker skin tone than him.

From what I understand, Japanese people are actually pretty racist against black people, so I guess it’s not surprising that Oda made them ambiguously black

Japan is racist towards black people ....

Japan as a whole reggae scene dedicated to Caribbean culture in Japan -- they also have a hip hop area dedicated towards black culture, there is also Japanese hip hop music and collaborations with western hip hop artist.

This thread seems uneducated, of course no offence.

It’s even more funny when you look at many of these characters official manga coloring. The anime actually make characters like Teach and King look more black than they canonically are.

Yea I wouldn't trust Oda's colouring when it comes to skin tones, he's just extremely lazy, in the manga King is clearly darkskinned, but in the volume cover he just goes with the colour available to him (which was the same colour as Zoro), and what shows up better I guess.

For all intents and purposes King is supposed to be much much darker than Zoro. Anime is a better tool for skin tones, as there is actual variance.

I mean it’s pretty common knowledge that Japan is a pretty xenophobic country in general. There’s a reason why it’s one of the hardest first world countries to move to.

Japanese racism towards black people really shines through in 90’s/early 2000’s anime. Pretty much every black background character in DBZ looks like they’re straight out of a minstrel show. In fact, the very first black person we saw in OP was this guy, who also looks like he’s straight out of a minstrel show:

A modern American cartoon would immediately be cancelled if they depicted a black person like this. Also, the fact that Oda said Usopp’s just “African,” instead of saying he’d be from a specific country from Africa, is pretty sus.
