Why are there two names for everything in one piece? I know L and R sound similar in Japanese, but I haven't seen this in other manga.

IIRC that's for the way Japanese people pronunce those words therefore how Japanese people feel more comfortable with typing those names.

You know some people read the manga not in English but translated to the language of their country. And in some countries they translated the name sometimes with different letter.

Because official manga translations for some reason use Zolo instead of Zoro.

Couple of reasons. Unofficial translations combatting with official ones, old translations that stick in the readers head more (Calamities instead of Distasters), the L R thing (I think there is no letter L in Japanese?), Zoro‘s thing was from fear of being sued by the Zorro when the 4kids dub came out, Oda not being great at English (Levelly/Reverie, both Alabasta and Arabasta having been used officially by him.)

I think in general Japanese is a hard language to translate to English.

Happens more in One Piece I would guess just because there’s a lot more western words used than in other mangas, plus it’s been going on since the days of crappy translations? I’m sure I remember Bleach having a bit of trouble as well with the Arrancar and Quincy names (Quilge/Kirge and Ywach/Juhabach come to mind)

This is why I prefer subs over dubs, you lose shit in translation and end up with bizarre shit like Animal Kingdom Pirates for Kaido’s crew, something that sounds more like a joke than one of the most powerful collections of pirates in the world :laughmoji:
