The official one piece magazine stated he's a swordsman.

Shooting a sword out of King's hand in a surprise attack while he's partying, including drinking or being drunk, doesn't really mean a lot.

Part of the pirate/samurai plan was to attack them while they're drunk. After the attack began the beast pirates where told to sober up.
