We also dont know which of them had DF powers during their escapes.
And BB is all about hunting powerful DF's to give to his subordinates.
They could have had some substantial power growth.
Shiryu was already a monster back then, so it fits him to have a more "utility" power instead.

Don't forget they had seastones. With means they just fight in regular physical battle. Beating WsW a cp9 skilled guy in close combat is something kinda hype.

Anyway i am sure Luffy's awakening is under way. Oda is already making us having some assumptions about the DF. and we know that Onigashima is in its way to the capital and Kaido planing in let it crush the Flower Capital. so Luffy's Awakening is important. when you think about the opening Luffy destroys Onigashima with a punch. What if his awakning is a part of that. to be honest Oda could make that possible using awakening alone or together with haki we know that Luffy can mix his haki with his DF.
