She gave him a favorable town reading, mentioning he was paying attention to the game and active. Then when I brought up why I thought reading someone town for those reasons weren't a good idea, she seemed to be quite dismissive about it.

Paying attention or not depends on the play style. An active player who is genuinely interested to play would pay attention no matter they are town or scum
