Exactly. Enma did the exact same thing when Zoro first used it as well. It's just that the sword has a will of it's own and carries the soul of its former wielder. It still is sapping into Zoro's haki though.

Zoro just has a weird connection with these blades. It’s been this way for a long time.

Yeah that's how swords were introduced basically in the manga. It happened in some Pre TS chapter. Zoro was tackling Daz Bones if I recall correctly, then the Breath of all Things was used.
