Not entirely true, Vietnam is still a communist country and the U.S are now even trading with them so to say, "United States fought Vietnam was to stop communism" isn't an accurate statement. The reason for the Vietnam War was because the United States were frightened that an independent Vietnam will cause a chain reaction for other southeast Asian countries specifically Indonesia, Thailand and Japan; this was known as the domino effect. United States didn't want an independent Vietnam because then Indonesia will want to become independent, Thailand would want to become independent, etc. The U.S. were extremely frightened that the worse case scenario might happen if Vietnam becomes independent and that is Japan considering to become independent and thus ousting the American military bases in Japan, so to prevent that, they bombed the shit out of the weak, poor nation of Vietnam specifically South Vietnam were vast majority of the fighting was done.
"Communism" is just a boogeyman term to try to justify wars. Don't fall for that crap.
