If zoro really was the vice captain we won’t be having this argument, like how no one argues whether Rayleigh or Ben are the vice captain(first mate). And yes I agree that zoro is the second strongest and should be the VC but he was not given that position by luffy who is the captain of the crew

Exactly. The funny thing is that some people want to make as if First Mate means "first to join the crew".
While it's completely not like this. I mean, just take a fucking dictionary and you will see that First Mate means "the officer on a ship who is most important after the captain" "the officer second in command to the master of a merchant ship" .

So there's nothing to argue, First Mate is the same as Vice Captain.
Being this a shonen manga, it also equates to being the widely recognized second strongest in the crew/group. Basically, the number two, which is what Oda showed us portraying the Number Twos of the main crews and groups on the color spread cover of chapter 1031.

The thing is first mate doesn’t always mean VC cuz in reality King is a calamity just like Queen and Jack so he doesn’t have more authority than they have. So is the old man who helped BM create her crew and entire empire. Nonetheless, Zoro does deserve such title and all, but cuz it this title isn’t officially recognized within the crew no one is gonna be the VC.
