I guess this is now WG canon to call all who didn't like Luffy's new PU - edgelords, who just want bleach style power up... ok.
I remember before Luffy become mythical hax god, his fans was actually proud that their boy have just some lame-paramecia fruit but still fully capable to stand strong against overpowered mosters with amazing fruits... People make fun of chosen one virgins from other shonens...

So is making your mc special because of destiny actually makes them less special? Or it is a perfect development and peak writing from Oda?

Now we find out that the main character was essentially always destined for greatness. He was just chosen by strongest fruit.
I mean MC can't be completely random dude but Luffy's already have coc and will of D. But give him strongest hax DF on top of that...
Is Luffy desire to be Pirate King is even his or his DF(with is turns to be have a mind of his own)

Oda was forced to do it because unlike other characters in the manga, Luffy could not train his physical strength without sestone cuffs, and did not have any professional training, teaching him martial arts, nor does he have a weapon like everyone else in the series.

And he still has a devil fruit that killing him, so he was really shit on hard by Oda.

So no, Luffy is very unlucky and this move was to bring balance to the story for Luffy.

Luffy's Disadvantages

Luffy has no weapon- Every Yonko has 1

Luffy has no martial arts- Every person has this or a weapon

Luffy could not train physical strength without seastone due to him having a rubber body

Luffy's Devil Fruit kills him

So Luffy is in fact the most disadvantaged character in the story.

So how could the author solve this? You see that is the dilemma Oda put himself in.

I actually don't get them.. The story have planted the idea of Luffy being destined by fate since Vol 1 Ch 1. And every time a character do mentions that Luffy is :-
1- That kid is gonna be big ~ Ben Beckman
1- Dream Or Fate ~ Woop Slap
2- Perhaps they are the Pirates we are waiting for ~ Crocus
3- So it lives the Will of D ~ Dr Kureha
4- What does the world want from this child ~ Nyun Grandma
5- Mihawk Speech ~ Mihawk himself

There are more and more.. i mean comon it was a matter of time. The Big Issue here is everyone already jumping to conclusions without looking back at the story as a whole and what it represents and What Luffy stands for.

Luffy is not a HERO unlike other Shonen mangas he lives the way he wants to because thats what he sees best without caring for causalities around him. Yes he saves people because he is a good guy but he also saves bad people to achieve selfish goals "Crocodile - Ceasar".

The Themes of One Piece are plenty but the one that sticks out the most is "Free Will vs Fate". So this is all intentional and not something new. It was about time Oda explored that theme heavily which is happening now to Luffy and guess who else? Zoro and Kaido.

One Piece Started with this

A guy with a not so Strong Power against Sand, Lighting, Ice, Cats, Huge Giant, a Robot a Poison a Black Blade a Magma A Quake man and a freaking Black Hole etc etc.. What is special about him being able to take a form of a God who is able to use Rubber/Resin freely against all the above who also possesses great powers that can destroy worlds "Black Holes - Quakes - Lighting - Magma".

There are issues yes and i totally agree and i can see this becoming a big problem later on in the story. But for now i will hold my judgment for later like i did with Naruto.

I am sorry man but your post here is 100% wrong. @Rmstorm

Luffy could not train his physical strength without sestone cuffs
Luffy as a Kid couldn't even Punch a Tree and Yet he was able to Break Buildings at the age of 17. Luffy couldn't even overpower a Pacifista in a Physical Punch attack and after 2 years time skip he was able to break one with 1 Punch using the tech G2.

Luffy has no weapon- Every Yonko has 1

Luffy has no martial arts- Every person has this or a weapon
With his Power he doesn't need a weapon because the other Yonkou had great powers but lacked the close combat prowess so they held weapons. But Luffy can fight with stretching and can do whatever he wants with his body.

Luffy could not train physical strength without seastone due to him having a rubber body
Luffy as a kid couldn't punch a bandit but he trained physically enough to clash with anyone and the Pacifista's example i wrote above. and Lastly you forgot one thing. Luffy actually has the best fruit in the series to boost his Physical Power. With his Rubber he can blow air in his muscles and bones to overpower his opponents with limits ofc but he can train less in Physical Training unlike Zoro who has to train hard.

Luffy's Devil Fruit kills him
I don't know about that. Luffy can do weird stuff to revive himself everytime he gets beaten down. "Mizu Luffy - after Iva's treatment - and now this"

So how could the author solve this? You see that is the dilemma Oda put himself in.
He already did ever since G2 and G2 introduction.

1. A lot of people act like this fruit revelation ruins everything that came before it, so I ask you; what did it change? What did "Luffy has a rubber body thanks to the Nika Nika fruit" change from "Luffy has a rubber body thanks to the Gomu Gomu fruit" before he actually gained access to the Nika Nika fruits transformation last chapter? Nothing. The 1000 previous chapters are still just like you remember them. This doesn't change the past, it only affects the future

2. I can see why the way this change will affect the future might piss people off, especially those that are really hooked on the idea of "underdog luffy", and I'm with them partially on that. But the reason why I'm happy with Gear 5 in spite of that is simple: its really cool and fun
I'm okay with a transformation that's kind of asspull-y so long as its also interesting, and G5 is really interesting. He worked his ass off to get all the way here, to just below the strongest creature in the world. And that's enough for me

My question is what the hell did df-less top-tiers like Roger or Garp have or do to contend with broken df abilities? If Prime Garp or Roger were to fight Luffy I think a lot of people still say Luffy loses, but how? Luffy gets what every other character has + magic bs, the playing field is not level. G5 is dumb because every character should have strengths and weaknesses in their kit but with Luffy he has access to every possible powerup of importance so he has no weaknesses.

we have yet to see the recoil effect of G5

It's a powerup that brought Luffy back from the dead to defeat Kaido 1v1. It would be repetitive to have a time limit as we already saw that so much with G4. It hardly matters what the drawback is if all of Luffy's opponents are defeated by the time it comes about.

If the drum heartbeat stops and Luffy's regular heartbeat doesn't return I'd be okay with that, though.

I'm not a fan of the Gomu being changed to the Nika, but I love Gear 5 itself. Luffy's powers were really fun and creative throughout the East Blue and early Grand Line, but over time they more or less devolved into "stretchy power that lets you punch your enemy harder." The introduction of haki exacerbated this further. And even though I liked Gear 4, it was basically just "super strong punchy form." Compare that to how he defeated Don Krieg by bending his legs around him mid-fall and then slamming him into the boat and it's just so much more boring by comparison

But seeing the shit Luffy pulled off these past few chapters felt a lot like his powers back in the East Blue. We see him do fun and goofy shit that doesn't boil down to "just punch harder lmao." It's honestly refreshing. So I guess if the alternative was keeping Luffy's powers stale or this, then I'll go with this. Obviously if they don't address the many plot holes that this creates, then yes that is bad writing and I won't attempt to defend it. But for now, I'm alright with this even though I do understand where people are coming from when they say they hate this.

I also don't buy that this gets rid of the theme of freedom since freedom is the entire point of this twist. He's free to do goofy shit in fights like he used to. Hell, they even say he has more freedom now. I get that some people are gonna see it as a "Chosen One" thing, but I wanna at least see how it plays out before I make any big conclusions on that.

It didn't have to be edge lord. Just not a fucking toddler Luffy again. **** was buffed and looked good than his previous designs. Nah fuck it let's revert 20 yo man back to toddler size again.

Look at Gear 4 Snakeman. Could Oda make some cool G4 form that will please most of the fanbase? Yes and he did.

G5 design is utter shit.

Powers are whatever. Bigger G3 and pulling the ground. + the biggest cheat code in all of One Piece heart beat pump revive. XD.

Prime Shanks, Roger , Shanks and Garp have the third level of CoC( coc beyond coating).

Which Luffy will get to beat Blackbeard.

The power up itself is legit in the OP verse because the most disparate things can happen and still look legit but the choice to have it happen so soon felt considerably off to me, I would have preferred if this power up came up later on in the show. The switch to a Godhood was quite a strike.
Its because of Kaido. If i am not mistaken.. Kaido is part "Ancient Giant" which there is a strong reason to believe that Joy Boy or Nika was an Ancient Giant who had this power that Luffy possesses. I would like to share more but its not going to be enough to post in a reply.

But i have a hunch its because Luffy is fighting Kaido who thought he was Joy Boy in the past.

No its different. Imo the edgelord term is for the ones who want a badass form as powerup and cant accept any light/happy/goofy design in powerups. I don't like Luffy's powerup since its lack of reasoning, lack of Luffy's own invention and chosen one concept instead, so i agree with you about that.

But i absolutely adore the nature of cartoon physics powerup Luffy has right now, since it's literally a power only Luffy can use to the max and no one else.

Tldr i have polarity of feelings about Luffy's Gear 5/Nika awakening, depending on which aspect of the story.

Luffy has everything in this series, everything

Color of Armament + Advanced Color of Armament (Internal Destruction and Barrier)
Color of Observation + Advanced Color of Observation (Future Sight and ? Voice of All Things ?)
Color of Conqueror + Advanced Color of Conqueror (Coating)
Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika = A Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit (Rarest Devil Fruit) with powers from both Paramecia and Logia Devil Fruits
Luffy's Devil Fruit Awakening can both change the enviroment (Doflamingo and Katakuri) and living beings (Law and Kidd)

Luffy HAS EVERYTHING

and half of this was gained in just Wano alone
