No, it was not obvious from start...and it makes sense to change the behavior of a character to someone else...I mean nika pretty much did it....just that Luffy's personality is also a bit similar so we don't look into it....but the awakening has as effect on him due to Nika...whatever he was.

It was clear that Luffy would always be Luffy that’s why I was telling people Luffy would not be taken over. This isn’t Attack on Titan. Luffy is a fan favorite changing him would have been one of the dumbest things that Oda could have done.
