Character Discussion Why did Oda include Marco in Wano?

#1
I've been thinking about this for a while now. What is the point of having Marco be part of the raid in Onigashima? Is it just fanservice? He hasn't done anything particularly noteworthy to justify his particular presence. If he wasn't there you could easily have other characters fill in for him without affecting the plot at all. If anything, I think that his inclusion in this arc has kind of lessened the mystique around him in the fans' eyes. Maybe Oda needs him to deliver some lore and exposition at the end of the arc?

My crackpot theory is that Oda had completely different plans for Marco in Wano that he had to drastically change at the last moment for whatever reason. My only proof of this? That whole little paper message subplot. The reveal was so anticlimactic and lame that it totally felt like a last minute decision.

What do you think? :moonwalk:

Same reason Carrot, Nami, Robin, Yamato, Sanji exist

fan service
I'm not a big fan of Oda's post-timeskip treatment of Robin, but you could very easily argue that she's the Strawhat with the most clear-cut, important plot purpose out of them all. Carrot and Yamato? Yeah I still don't know why they exist

The RS has to eat his fruit, of course he had to be included

RS?

To stall King and Queen before the arrival of the moments of their fights with Sanji and Zoro. Also, its possibile he wanted to do an arc with him and Weevil but he had to scrap it so he took Marco in Wano and will use Weevil for something else later in the story
I really like this one in specific, because the last thread I created here was asking what Weevil's purpose in the story is. It certainly feels like a natural assumption that Marco should have a part to play in Weevil's story (whatever that may be). But you're right, it does seem like his strange inclusion might be the result of some changes in his plans with the character.

Fanservice and to remind us how high level of a war this is.

Whitebeard's right hand man was as good as support in this war whereas he was undeniably number 2 in strength in marineford on Whitebeard's side.

In Onigashima? We have Zoro, Yamato, Kid and Law who are all arguably above Marco on their side.
This one makes a ton of sense, IMO: add one of the big Marineford players to give the reader a good point of comparison between the two wars, power-level wise. Perhaps not the best execution by Oda, but if this was the intent, it's a smart way to do it
