Character Discussion Kaido is the worst antagonist in the entire series and his "backstory" is objectively awful

#41
And compare this to Doflamingo who got like 5 chapters of backstory. Lol

Or compare this to Crocodile who doesn’t even need a backstory to be regarded by most as a great villain.

Then we get to Kaido, who until now most people agreed was poorly written but were convinced a backstory would save, only for Kaido to get only 4 pages of backstory that solve none of the issues with his character. Lol
That was Law’s backstory, not Doflamingo. He’s a side character for literally 90% of that flashback. That is like using Oden’s and Yamato’s flashback and count it to Kaido’s count

Imo in terms of development

1. Big Mom

2. Doflamingo

3. Kaido

the rest

Big Mom had a good flashback where she’s clearly the protagonists of her own story. Doflamingo got the bonus of being the antagonist of Law’s flashback who’s a pseudo straw hat, but the flashback is clearly not about him. Kaido is clearly the protagonist of his own story but his flashback was really short

And why’s is that exactly? And please don’t give me some lame “motivation” reasoning. Doffy’s was a spoiled child who though he deserved better and Big Mom is literally a (wo)manchild
Doflamingo's character is coherent and makes sense. We've been shown where his motivation comes from. He's a spoiled brat born as a CD that was dragged off his authority because of his father.

Apart from that the Flashback had emotions and hit differently than the mess that we've seen in Kaido's FB.

Nothing about Kaido actually makes sense. His character is full of contradictions from start to finish.

It’s not, Kaido is a warmonger who’s looking for the right battle to die in.

No he isn't. What for did he want to create a battle?
We've found out that he knew about Joyboy and that he'll come to Wano and that he'll ultimately be defeated by him. What was the point of smiles and preparing a world war with Doffy?

Why did he want to take over the world with Meme?

Nothing about Kaido actually makes sense. His fandom is doing some impressive mental gymnastics and give credit to Oda who probably never even thought about it.

Oda had no idea what Kaido actually wants.

1. The point of the war is because he’s a warmonger, I literally told you that. Kaido craves battle

2. he literally said he’s bringing in the world of chaos

3. it makes sense, you just seem to obviously be forgetting stuff

What was the whole thing about Kaido clearly not wanting to kill Momo then and giving him a chance?
Post automatically merged:

when villains like Wapol, Hody Jones and Ceaser Clown exist the fact this thread even exists is just stupid.
All of them are better than Kaido because unlike them, Kaido is dramatically more important to the story.

A mediocre track played loudly is worse than an awful track played at low volume. That’s Kaido.

Personally, if i were Oda, my idea of writing Kaido's backstory would go something like this:

Kaido's beginning

A young kid Kaido was a slave who was a permanent fighter in an underground illegal fighting ring. Kaido was here because his oni parents and tribe were killed by human hunters, and he was captured alive and sold to the fighting ring at the Sabody auction house. Because of his tough body as an oni, Kaido was able to last to the very end and beat every other fighter. He earned his freedom by killing the owner of the illegal fighting ring after beating every other fighter. *(i think a gladiator style beginning better suits kaido than the whole 'child soldier thing' that Oda did)

Kaido's time with Rocks

A young Kaido would later join the Rocks Pirates after beating his way though the island to finally meet Rocks D Xebec at his base in person. Xebec was at first reluctant to have Kaido join because he already had too many crazy people on his crew, but Whitebeard being the kind hearted man that he was and was saw pity in Kaido as he was a orphan with nowhere left to go and convinced Rocks to let Kaido join their crew. Big Mom also vouched for Kaido to join their crew, not because she was kind like Whitebeard, but because she found Kaido interesting as she had never seen a person with real horns before, but Big Mom warned Kaido in private that Rocks was untrustworthy. At Whitebeard and Big Mom's persistence, Rocks finally relented and took in Kaido to join his crew.

On the day the Rocks Pirates fell at God Valley, Rocks D Xebec retreated momentarily from the fight vs the Marines and the Roger Pirates after he and his crew were surrounded and had been fighting for a long time to the point of exhaustion, ordering Kaido to stay behind and hold the line and promised reinforcements or that he had a plan to get them out of this predicament. Kaido followed his captains orders, but help never arrived as foretold by Big Mom of Rock's habit of betraying and backstabbing his own crewmembers to save his own skin. Kaido soon tired out and was defeated-despite Kaido's exceptional endurance, this is why Kaido told Kinenmon that pirates would always betray people, because Kaido was betrayed by Rocks D Xebec his own captain, and also why Kaido cared when members of his own crew like when Jack was defeated. Before Big Mom retreated with Rocks, she was kind enough to give Kaido a bag of food, since as a glotton it was the only thing Big Mom carried with her all the time other than her homies. In the bag of food, included the Mythical Zoan Azure Dragon Fruit which kaido later ate while waiting for the marines to show up.

Kaido's time captured by the marines

Interested by Kaido's toughness and his genes of that being an oni, the WG experimented on Kaido after capturing him at Punk Hazard by Dr Vegapunk, hoping to create super soldiers for the marines-the result of such experiments was the Numbers that we saw on Wano. This is also where kaido first met a young King, another prisoner kept to be experimented on by the WG for the fire making abilities of the Lunarian Tribe. But King in not an oni and is not as tough as Kaido, and soon the experiments were so extreme that he was gonna die from his injuries. It is at that time Kaido made up his mind to escape. Queen who was working under Vegapunk at the time also rebelled and escaped with King and Kaido together, because Vegapunk and the World Government put Queen under house arrest for his dangerous and inhumane biological mass destruction experiments, similar to the fate that befell Ceaser Clown. Kaido, King and Queen escaped the lab and prison but couldn't leave the island. This was when Kaido first activated his devil fruit powers and turned into a dragon for the first time and escaped punk hazard with King and Queen on his back. The three of them would later form the Beast Pirates.

Kaido as his own pirate captain

Kaido rose up from the ranks of infamous pirates and soon became a feared and respected pirate. He also stood out among other pirates and made a name for himself for his strength and his sole strength alone. He would challenge both other strong and infamous pirates and the marines and navy alike indiscriminately. When things got hairy and his crew was about to lose a fight, Kaido never once retreated, instead only calling his crew to retreat while he alone stayed behind to fight all their enemies. This was how Kaido lost to the other yonkos 7 times and got captured by the marines 18 times as stated in his introduction. Kaido was like this because he didn't want to become the very same captain Rocks that he despised for abandoning one's crew to save their own skin.

Kaido's purpose in Wano

Kaido and his crew first arrived at Wano at Orochi's invitation for mercenary work. Orochi hired Kaido to help him strike fear into the Wano citizens and with kaido's help wanted to take power in Wano while Oden was still away. This was when Kurozumi Higurashi saw the opportunity to finally overthrow the Kozuki rule and approached Kaido for his help by impersonating and transforming herself into an oni to gain kaido's trust, aware of Kaido's disdain and hatred for humans. Kaido agreed to help as the takeover of Wano would allow him to finally have his own permanent base, but he never had any interest in helping orochi and the Kurozumi clan in earnest to begin with. It was only after Higurashi overheard kaido and king's conversation about joyboy did she finally came up with a plan to trick Kaido by telling him that Joyboy would come to Wano one day, and that kaido just had to stay here and wait. So Kaido stayed and waited, and as joyboy was said to be liberator of slaves, Kaido turned the Wano citizens into literal slaves in the hopes of drawing joyboy out.

Oden soon returned and asked Kaido to leave, Kaido responded by lying to Oden that he and his crew would leave sometime in the near future as soon as they found suitable island to set up their base, just like how Rocks lied to Kaido before him. Oden agreed, and during this time Kaido bolstered his forces while also built onigashima castle.

*I'm gonna change the plot a little here to make it more interesting. The Red Skull dome was actually the real skull from one of kaido's oni ancestors who kaido found and bought back from his very home where his parents and tribe were killed and hunted down by humans. Kaido made a castle out of the skull, as his own twisted way of 'honoring' and 'remembering' his ancestors and his people. The red skull belonged to the largest oni ever to walk the planet thousands of years ago (yes even larger than Oars who was dubbed the Continent Puller). Kaido was able to bring the giant Crimson Skull back because he had already awakened his devil fruit back then and was able to fly and carry the giant skull to Wano with the help of the dragon flame clouds.

Oden returned with the Red Scarabs to try to take Orochi and Kaido down. Kaido unexpectedly was able to beat oden after Oden was distracted by Higurashi by turning into Momo. Kaido also killed Higurashi for not only impersonating Oden, but also for impersonating and lying to him that she was an oni just like he was (kaido actually saw though her lie the first time, but nevertheless agreed to help her anyway since kaido wanted Wano). *I also added Higurashi lying to Kaido to actually give Kaido a better reason to kill her, since i thought higurashi impersonating Oden was little lame and boring.

For the next 20 years, Kaido's goals were to find the Ancient Weapons to upset the balance of the world that were unfairly ruled by the celestial dragons and the humans, and to enslave Wano's citizens in order to draw out Joyboy into the world so he can liberate the world and all races from the Celestial Dragons, bring about a world of true equality, where survival of the strongest ruled, just like he had learned in his younger life. From kaido's point of view, enslaving Wano's citizens was just to draw Joyboy out, as Joyboy was a liberator of the oppressed. This is also why kaido said at the end of the chapter that Joyboy will beat him one day, because Kaido enslaved Wano's people, becoming an enemy of joyboy who represented liberation and freedom, and Joyboy taking out Kaido in a sense will also free Kaido's past as a gladiator.

Post script: I know that my take is not too different from Oda's, i just expanded it a bit. But i hope its bit better than the half assed take that Oda gave in chapter 1049 that was just like some 5 pages or something.

Can´t deny I´m disappointed about this too. Kaido is a cool antagonist but the expectations were set too high, everyone was looking forward getting an unique backstory in his flashback, instead it turned out to be a lackluster in my opinion.
Yep expecially more and more the fight went on.

I think rooftop Kaido was more intense from a character perspective. 🤔

Momonosuke the annoying protagonist, oden's lame character, and now kaido's lackluster backstory.... interesting to see what the reviews of this arc will be once its over.
:kidwat:

Its also hilarious that Oda said before that Luffy defeating Kaido with a bigger punch would be boring, only to then have Kaido be actually defeated by an supposedly even bigger punch. If that's what Oda considers to be 'better' than i can only Lmfao.

What the FUCK Oda.

That trash backstory in 1049 was literally a knock off Douglas Bullet backstory. AND DOUGLAS BULLET DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A GOOD BACKSTORY.

This man literally gave us an entire filler chapter in 1048 and then only FOUR PAGES of backstory for the most important arc antagonist in the entire series up until this point.

I can't believe this is what all of post time skip has been building towards, it's so bad.

:whitepress:
I like it :(
