But Gear 5 made me feel empty about the fight, the fact that his df became so different at times it felt like Luffy was doing do much random shit

When the rules are tossed out the window, it's kind of hard to get invested in the stakes of the fight. Kaido didn't even have an "ace card" to drop on Luffy. Doffy at least at awakening to make it competitive against Gear 4th. Kaido just got beat around until Luffy decided it was time to finish things.
