In the last chapter Luffy drew the short straw so he is supposed to go to Sphinx Island. Will he really do that though? That Island isn't closer to Lodestar than Wano, he is not moving forward. There is nothing really there. Perhaps the corpses of Ace and WB. Is Oda really throwing in this detour just so they can visit the grave? Or will Luffy just go to Elbaf next anyway? I know people like to speculate that Weevil is there. So? Is he gong to fight the whole Strawhat crew? I don't see it.
Future Events Will they really go to Sphinx Island? I don't buy it.

Strowhats visiting Sphinx island makes a lot of sense, I actually wanted to make a thread about this, but since you already did, then I'll put my thoughts here.
Luffy should visit his brother's grave to drink the sake cup, it has been set up. Plus, Luffy and marco never had any dialogue in Wano, which is strange, now it seems that Marco had already left Wano before the strowhats did. Which means that we might have a conversation between Marco and Luffy in Sphinx island. And last but not least, Weevil's plot line can be resolved in Sphinx island. Weevil will eventually find out where Marco is, and will come to demand his inheritance. Luffy being there helps to drive the plot, on top of that there has been a slight hint from Oda that Weevil might join Luffy's crew.

I wouldn't say it like that way. But yeah, back in time there was a news piece where Oda explained his editor or some anime stuff worker (I'm not sure about the details) as to why Weevil is a very cool character. The worker was surprised and asked Oda what makes Weevil cool, and Oda explained him, after which he agreed.
Now, knowing Oda he wouldn't call Weevil cool if he's a bad guy, plus Weevil is being manipulated by his mother, Weevil in reality just wants to avenge his father's death, but Bakin is against it since she only wants money, but Weevil is not interested in money. Luffy is infamous for inviting weird people to his crew (that's how Brook joined) so if by some chance something would happen to Bakin and Weevil was free to do whatever he wants, then he would try to kill Blackbeard. And since Luffy is destined to take him out–and he will probably say so to Weevil–them Weevil joining Luffy makes sense. On top of that, Weevil and Luffy are very similar, they are both retarded, so I assume they would become best friends.
But there's another reason: after the abolishment of the Shichinukai system, the ex–Shichinukais are now joining the Emperors. Jinbe joined Luffy, Crocodile and Mihawk are part of Buggy's crew. It would make whole a lot more sense if Weevil joined Luffy. I assume that Doflamingo will eventually escape and join one of the Emperors as well, ether Blackbeard or Buggy.

I can't think of any reason to go to Sphinx unless the strawhats take out Weevil there so Marco can join as a Nakama or round up the WBP for the grand fleet. Unless they head there and something from the News Coo causes them to change course.
In terms of Ace's grave, I'd rather see Luffy visit once Blackbeard and Akainu are defeated or he becomes Pirate King.
Plus Oda can always change his mind about where things are or how they look. Look how ridiciouly different the silhouette for Kaidou was from the real thing.
