Characters vital to the plot or the world's mysteries (like Vegapunk was said to be, 600 chapters ago) should not be teased for 10-15 years

Then again, the story itself shouldn't be stretched that long

Oda wasn’t planning on working on One Piece for this long, so it probably just ended up happening this way.

I assume he’s been wanting to reveal Vegapunk for many years, but was waiting until near the end of the series to do so.
