Questions & Mysteries Why doesn't Zoro consider King a swordsman?

#5
Because King uses different fighting styles while Zoro only uses swordsmanship in combat.
But there is, for example, Kaku who was supposedly a swordsman but used a wide variety of techniques without a sword?
Or did he use swordsmanship but didn't call himself a swordsman?
It seems to have only been stated that he has the best swordsmanship in CP 9 but that means other CP 9s also have it but are not swordsmen.

First of all, "You didn't call yourself a Swordsman" =/= "You're not a Swordsman"

Second of all, King basically said he doesn't believe in relying on just one fighting method but using other stuff like Fireballs, Magma Flames, Explosions, Zoan Abilities, Sword Breaker trick to disarm, Spikes etc,. to win at any cost.

And that's when Zoro talked about King not calling himself one.

In a duel between true swordsman their swordsmanship is the only thing they use to win the fight. King was using df abilities and other means to try and ensure that he won the fight.

Think about it like zoro as a boxer and king as a Muay Thai fighter who zoro thought was a boxer because he was wearing boxing gloves, zoro assumed since king carried a sword that he considered himself a swordsman when for king the sword was just another weapon in his arsenal

I think this is similar to why mihawk and shanks are no longer rivals, mihawk bested shanks in swordsmanship so Shanks went on to develop his haki in ways that a swordsman wouldn't. Shanks was able to mostly keep up with the world's greatest swordsman so he felt his swordsmanship training was complete and moved on with his training to be a more well rounded fighter capable of taking on all types of fighters where as mihawk was only interested in continuing his training with the sword

Because King clicked a button, turned his sword into a comb and tried to punch Zoro in the face with a big spiked fist.

It doesn’t really make all that sense for King not to count when Kaku the giraffe nose cannon does, but it would seem the difference would be this idea that King is a “killing machine” with no “school“ or “style”. Implies a sort of anything goes, savage fighting pit type guy, while Kaku had Yontoryuu. And Cabaji had all his nonsense. And Zoro himself has done things not all too dissimilar from King in punching and kicking his enemies.

Basically, it‘s a stupid line from Oda that he didn’t think through.

Sorry for being off topic, it just reminded me of the obscure criteria for owning CoC.
Oda basically says through Chinjao and King that it requires kingly ambition/to be king but what kind of kingly ambition does Yamato have? Katakuri?

It wasn't the first time. Oda already said this through Daz.

It's hard when there are so many factors in One Piece, but the takeaway here is if you have many different tools in your arsenal, and swordsmanship doesn't account for majority of it, you can potentially be free from the swordsman label.

Because King doesn't have a sword style. He fights how he wants and uses a sword as a weapon, but that's it. No different than Vergo using bamboo, or Sabo using a pipe. It's just a weapon for them to aid in combat.

And not for nothing but Kaku is a terrible comparison. He had just gotten his Devil Fruit, and was learning how to use it when he fought Zoro. Prior to that, he had a legit sword style that he had mastered.
