It's not used just strictly towards women though. You can argue it's used almost as much towards men in One Piece as well. Hell, in Wano alone, pretty much all 9 of the scabbards fell victim to it. Oda just likes the "Damsel in distress" trope. Woman, man.... Makes no difference.

At the end of the day, it's used to set up the Straw Hats always being the ones to save everyone.
But we agree that it IS how he portrays women, what he does for the guys isn’t the topic at hand. We can split hairs about how often he falls back on the same cliches, but the bottom line remains that he’s not an expert when it comes to writing for ladies (not that he has to be, let’s just call a spade a spade) and doesn’t seem to be creating fully fleshed representatives for the segment of his audience composed of same. The first word in my original post indicated I don’t think he’s misogynistic; I’m saying that’s immaterial because he still doesn’t write women as well as he does men, regardless of the reason.

Also, you did hit the nail on the head with that last bit…they’re the protagonists, so at least the women on the crew have better backstories and motivation, but that’s two characters in a) a ten-person crew, and b) a series with a hundred new faces with every arc change, not the best ratio by this measure.

They don’t all act like damsels in distress with no agency, which describes most female characters he’s introduced, so I don’t think we need to put him on a progressive pedestal just because he doesn’t seem to outwardly hate women. He’s written Nami and Robin well enough, but let’s not sit here and act like many others weren’t just coat racks with huge boobs and little impact in the way of dialogue or personality.
Lol, most DO act like damsels in distress when bad stuff happens.

Have you ever been involved in such a situation in real life???

I wish he sexualized female characters more tbh, especially yamato and reiju

That's how he portrays, some women, but not all. And now that I think of it, how many of them are there actually? Vivi, Shirahoshi, Rebecca..... Unless we count Nami on Arlong Park, and Robin in Enies Lobby, I think that's about it, but I am just trying to think of characters that played a major role in an arc. There might be more.

I mean, him not giving women enough major roles is telling in itself that he’s not sure what to do with them…but you’re right, the most prominent examples are about it, a lot of the others are more assertive and quirky even if they get disproportionate panel time.

Oh no..

Slight preferences and some realistic stereotypes has some people thinking Oda hates women

Why would he bother drawing women for majority of his career if he DID hate em

Mf should have drawn Yaoi instead no?

... Are we talking about the many nami-like characters conspiracy :suresure:
