I am someone who tries to look deeper into a character for the themes they embody and try to figure out what the writer is trying to say with it.
If I find substantial themes, they are a good character to me. If the themes are non-existent and/or contradictory, they are a bad character.

Just out of curiosity, what would it take for you guys to completely drop the series?

If there were multiple chapters back to back that were boring I would consider dropping it for a while. A good or bad chapter can be really fun but a mid one where nothing happens can make reading a slog.
