Luffy wanted to beat him at his best which is why he ran away to constantly give kata the chance to rest his haki and body so that luffy doesnt just win due to kata running out of steam.

Katas entire role in the story was a training dummy disguised as a side villain.

That's a little ingenuous when luffy was the one benefitting the most from running away lol. He literally spend his haki and was done. But plot happened. And kata even wins the fight but decides to throw. Luffy got the moral victory.

Sometimes you can't take more than you should. Save your family, then get out. Trying to save everyone could legit trap them all instead.

Both benefited from it. Kata got to constantly fight at one hundred percent without worrying about wasting haki and luffy got to do the same. If luffy didn’t do this he probably would’ve won merely by Kata running out of his CoO and becoming weak.

Kata was never an enemy. Just a training dummy for luffy to get stronger. That’s what the entire fight was about. At no point is Kata truly a threat to the straw hats plans.
