There is a global spell castedby an ocular jutsu by someone that has swapped lives of Boruto who was supposed to be the good guy with the bad guy Kawaki.

So now boruto is now seen as kawaki and accused of his crime which include allegedly killing naruto.
Sauske has overcome this through sheer will and rationality as he saw his Sarada break down due to what's going and in the process awakened Mangekyo. From that Sauske deduced that some shits up and with his big brain he was able to deduce that some shit's up even though the ocular spell actively pressures him to not assume reality. So he still thinks of boruto as Kawaki but with the suspicions he inclines to believe his daughter and boruto.
