It's very important to make the distinction and be very precise about that. Because sex is not "it's a male or it's a female", Sex is defined by a large array of sexual characteristics, from chromosoms to genital organs, to physical attributes or animal behaviors. hence why we say "they have male or female characteristics"

BUT

"Man" is a GENDER identity. It's specific to the human specie.
